The Black Lives Matters movement was founded in 2013, but it was not until recently that it has attracted so much attention from the public, including youth. In your opinion, has social media had a role in reigniting this movement? If yes, how did it do this during the intervening 7 years?

I think D has shown an inspiring amount of enthusiasm for civic engagement, and as others said, social media seems to be an important access point for them, and a great educational tool.

D did say that they didn't feel they had a role to play in the Black Lives Matter movement, which is interesting to me. I know it is difficult not to get caught up in/paralysed by white guilt when facing racial injustice.

I am thinking about how the networks we are a part of, and the various profiles we follow, and the algorithms that deliver our content, impact what messages we are receiving. I am wondering why it is that D is receiving the message that they might not be a big part of the solution...? Another way of thinking about this might be: what messages aren't they receiving?

I am a white, cis, straight person, but my networks are outlining for me what role I can play, and how I can use my privilege and my platform to be a part of this movement, both on- and offline, to help to dismantle white supremacy.

This serves as a reminder to me that our networks really are personalized, and each of us is experiencing our own version of the internet, and of these platforms, each time we go online. How does that impact the movement? --Esmé

PS: to touch on the question of how the movement has evolved since BLM's start in 2013, so many factors have intersected at this moment (the virus, unemployment which has freed people up to be more civically engaged, a reevaluation of what kind of a world we want to build coming out of lockdown, etc) that have made folks who didn't feel they had a place in the movement previously want to get more involved in this moment.

I think that movement organizers have done an incredible job during this latest wave in particular to work together to outline concepts like #DefundThePolice and to get folks talking about prison abolition, etc.

I think foremost acknowledging oneself (teacher) as not holding knowledge to dispense (banking model) but rather recognizing the intersecting histories which (in)form students' arrival to class is imperative. Teachers must first engage with the constituents of their classroom in order to determine what those students hope to achieve in their lives. Direction must be intimately informed. By helping the student see themselves as shapers of their own education, the realm of education can also be expanded to include other communal, personal elements.

My sense is that incorporating connected civics into your classroom really depends on your goal. Are students doing a letter writing campaign a la HPA? Or are you perhaps, like Dan Meyers, teaching statistics using social movements (although you'd want to think hard about the ethics of that...) and then letting them account for their own engagement? I don't think the system is as limiting as we think. There is room for, if not class, then school based movements. Look at the climate marches last spring and fall! That's definitely people organizing and engaging with educational aims and real life issues, non?

Maybe you're familiar with this term... The Economist (I know...) wrote about this a few years ago, but I think it's worth bringing up here. Are you civically engaged if you check into a Standing Rock protest? Publish a black box on your instagram with #blackouttuesday? These are examples of so-called slacktivism: signalling activist allegiances without having to do much beyond clicking a "Like" button on Facebook or posting to the 'gram. I don't know if this is really engagement, though. With connected civics, I wonder how much we need to grapple with "virtue signalling" versus people actually engaging in meaningful causes.
So, something to think about: where do you draw the line?

In part, because it deals with young people, most high school students should already see the point. However, we will encounter some resistance as to why an engaging activity is relevant in the first place. The important part is to discuss the issue and see why students don't want to be engaged. After all, connected civics is all about communication or comminuty!

I think there must be ways to foster civic engagement in every subject. For ELA it could be something as simple as having older students go to elementary schools and read to kids. Whatever we decide to do, it is important that students feel like they are being listened to and that the issues they care about are addressed in some way.

Furthermore, it is important to ask questions and to keep asking questions. Students retain more information when they have a say and a voice in the classroom. Therefore, I think that I will try to introduce pressing topics and world problems through the use of digital media in the classroom to start a conversation.
