Arthur Miller is the author of the book “The Crucible “ (1953) . Arthur found inspiration for this book because of the political climate at the time . During the 1950’s America went through a period of time where they were scared that communist spies were sending information from within America . Due to this, many prominent figures in the government and entertainment business were being publicly interrogated to give up information. However , when Arthur was questioned on the subject, he refused to give up any information on who might potentially be a communist sympathizer . Due to his refusal of giving up information, Arthur became blacklisted by the government . Arthur saw this as another witch trial going on in America and he decided to write the book. .

This pictures shows a women being held in front of a jury of her peers for being a witch. At the time a group of young girls started of a chain of false accusations .In the image you can clearly see a young girl pointing an accusing finger at the woman . The girls would act strangely at the presence of the accused . This was sufficient evidence to condemn many to death . The belief that there were witches in Salem came about because of prior belief that satan was alive and that he is recruiting people to join him . This idea scared many puritans in Salem , so when the first accusations started in Salem they genuinely believed they had to stop the witches.

Puritans settled in America in 1630 in the Massachusetts Bay colony. They left to America after being persecuted in Europe for trying to reform the church of England. Puritans believed that God made a unique agreement with them and that they had to live According to the Scriptures. They saw themselves as a perfect utopia to the rest of the world. Anything that would disturb or ruin this image was seen as evil. They also believed that Satan was engaged in an active war against their God. They believe that witches were disciples that would help him recruit or brainwash them into joining his army.

To test if a person accused was a witch They would look for a mark called the devils tete . They would Also perform a Swimming test. They would drop the accused into a lake and if they floated that Meant they were which. If the accused would sink that meant they were innocent. Torturing a witch was legally acceptable because witchcraft was a crime against the church in the state. In today’s standards this evidence would be laughed at . At the time though this was seen as a serious piece of evidence .

In summary “The Crucible “ by Arthur Miller Was written in response to the red scare that was going on in America. The crucible depicts the Salem witch trials, which parallels to the red scare in America. Both events show how destructive Human nature is when a Group of religious and Arrogant people believe a lie . The Puritans believed that they had to be morally and socially adequate so that the rest of the world could see how perfect their religion was. They also believed they had to live by how the Bible instructed. They were constantly trying to find clues to whether they would go to heaven or hell. When the accusations of witches started, puritans were threatened. They acted out by trying to get rid of the so-called witches so that their eternal fate wouldn’t be threatened.
