As humans, our brain is wired to keep us alive. You may be aware of the fight or flight reaction that arises in response to a threat to our lives that during prehistoric times was necessary for the survival of the species. Today, although we don’t face those same threats, our brain is wired to perceive them as dangerous and will overreact to modern stressors that are not life-threatening.

A common stressor that I have observed, especially in this past year of the pandemic, is how easily people are triggered by “those other people” and are quick to blame and complain. What’s important about this observation is that we have the tools innately to counteract how we are wired to respond.

When “other people” trigger you and you find fault with them or maybe yourself, you become judgmental. This is normal. When you notice how your body reacts to this, it is an opportunity to engage in somatic practice, such meditation. And you can pay attention to the questions you are asking yourself about the person or situation.
