We live in a society where we constantly interact with others and are surrounded by those who in some way have an influence on our lives. In spite of all 
 of this, however, if I am asked about important relationships the first person who comes to mind is my Mum. It may sound banal but this is the person who cared for me and made sacrifices – without being asked – when I was little. The one who dealt with the falls and cuts and sleepless nights and tantrums. But actually when I think of her, it is not my childhood I think of but the sympathetic ear that listens to my troubles and helps me cope with my problems. Growing up is tough, we all know that, and it is just wonderful to have someone who will put up with you even when you’re horrible.

Friendship plays a major role in my life. Having a few good friends is like a blessing. In fact the proverb says ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’ which I take to mean that the true friends are those who stick with you when you’re down or upset or angry. Sometimes it’s not easy to get on well with your family all the time, and you need to talk things over with someone from outside – preferably someone who knows you well and cares about you. Someone you can tell your secrets too without feeling they will talk to others behind your back. I don’t have many friends but those few who are dear to me are very loyal and never let me down. I just hope we can continue to keep in touch over the years and stay friends for as long as possible.

Whenever anyone asks me about important relationships in my life, I think of my grandfather. 
 I feel I have had a great privilege given to me because I know lots of friends who have never known a grandfather or have only seen them very occasionally. My grandfather has always been an important part of my life. He retired in the same year I was born and took over many of the every day duties connected with childhood like taking me to nursery and collecting me, giving me tea and playing with me until my parents came back from work. Both my parents have important careers and long working hours, so I spent a lot of time with my Grandpa. 
As I grew up I began to look up to him more and more. He knew so many things! He had experienced so much and met so many interesting people. We kept in close touch even when I was old enough to look after myself and he was always there if I needed help with my studies – and guess who taught me to drive!

By far the most interesting person in my life and the one who has had the greatest influence on me, is my Godmother Lydia. She is one of my mother’s oldest friends and is a fascinating person full of energy and enthusiasm. Even in my earliest memories, I remember her frequent visits as being moments of fun and laughter that left me feeling warm and happy. She is an inspiration to me because she is always so positive. I have never heard her complain or criticise anyone and in fact she manages to relate to everyone she meets. As she didn’t get married and has no children of her own, I like to think that she sees me as the daughter she never had – but without the aggravation that often grows between mothers and teenagers.
