What is a Gaming Addiction?

Although it still isn’t 100% known what causes the appeal of video games, some researchers have said that it could be due to a release in dopamine, a chemical in the brain that raises one’s mood and energy levels. Parenting Science has also stated that an addiction to video games might not be caused by an addictive response, but maybe more so a psychological phenomenon known as “flow.” Flow can be described as someone becoming so wrapped up and immersed in a fake world; i.e. video games, so much so, that they begin to lose track of time and forgot the important things in life such as homework and chores. Some people get so immersed, that this sense of “flow” becomes too hard to walk away from at times, leaving relationships and activities being neglected by the person playing the video game. And that is a video game addiction

- For young people, maybe all their friends are getting a new gaming console. As his/her friends are playing with their new games they may ask them to buy one too some that they can all play games together online. Some of these kids, like mentioned before, may become too hooked on immersion and the sense that video games give off, which could lead to an addiction
- As well, gaming is becoming its own industry now. With e-sports on the rise, it is very rare for the average child to grow up without playing or at least seeing many video games. And I’ve heard about some schools now even offering an e-sports program, so now if children are already hooked on video games, they can pursue it as a full-time career now. From what I’ve seen, some of the payouts for these e-sports events are not cheap either.

- If the game is more than just a casual experience, and there is some sort of winning involved people may because super upset and become aggressive when they lose.
- When they are forced to stop playing games they may
become super irritable or even sad
- Since these people are so addicted to games, they may stop eating, and start seeing a loss of appetite which will lead to a massive weight loss.
- Some people may also stop taking care of themselves in the category of personal hygiene
- An increase in time on video games can lead to the neglect of one’s real-life friends or other relationships
- However, assuming the person is playing an online game they will have to communicate a lot to their teammates/friends which is good; but this cannot replace in-person conversations

Anyone who is suffering from a gaming addiction should visit their family doctor who will then send them to a psychotherapist. The therapist will then try to get the addict to understand how gaming is related to their school or job, emotions, moods, and sense of life goals and rewards and try to get them into the right mindset. As well, you can support someone with a gaming addiction by encouraging them to do more stuff out of the house. Try not to push them, but instead kindly ask; things like, hey let’s go to the park, or, do you want to the movies, etc.

- We should all work on our mental health daily because even if we feel like we’re doing well mentally, it’s always nice to take a break from work and the business side of things to just help ourselves. Resilience could play a part in someone’s mental health journey if they’re already struggling with mental health issues, they should get help and overcome whatever it is they’re going through using some sort of resilience.
