Reform is the idea of change for the better. The USA has had great reform influence, but what would inspire people to try to change the law? Certain figures, literature, and most of all, religion, planted the radical idea in people's minds.
One of the biggest factors was religion. There was a huge religious movement in the 1820's through the 1830's called the great awakening. It emphasized that through God, people have a place in society. Religious sermons were held and people would gather around to hear the pastors, just like what you see in the background. In the end, they saw justification through God to make a change in the country by reform. Hand in hand, some people had the belief of Transcendentalism which believed that man triumphed over society so it is theirs to change.
Let's talk about figures. Andrew Jackson was elected in 1828, and as said in the picture above, he promoted the common people. Andrew Jackson was an average citizen elected into power and to everyone else, they saw that if he could make a change, they could too. Henry David Thoreau introduced civil disobedience, a non-violent way of protest. On top of that, other people introduced art and literature to promote reform. Nathaniel Hawthorn wrote "The Scarlet Letter," Walt Whitman wrote "Leaves of Grass," Ralph Waldo Wrote "Self-Reliance, and more shown in the image above labeled America Reform Propaganda.

The Abolitionist movement was the reform movement to end slavery. It started in the mid 1800's, the Revolutionary Era, with both black and white leaders. Why would people join the movement? They believed that it would hold true to the phrase "liberty and equality(justice) for all."
Slaves were treated brutally in the fields in the south. The north had already banned slavery, but most Northerners did nothing to speak against slavery. As mentioned in the pictures above, two Newspapers were published, The Liberator, and the North Star, written by William Lloyd Garrison, and Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass inspired Sojourner Truth, a former slave, to speak out about her experience about the evils of slavery. Other vocal abolitionists(people who spoke about the cause to end slavery) include Angelina and Sarah Grimke, who were daughters of a slave owner and spoke about what they witnessed. One final upstander would include Harriet Tubman. As mentioned in the picture above, she helped slaves escape to the north or even to Canada through the underground railroad, a series of back roads hidden from slave owners and revealed through code.
All of the people who spoke up put their lives at risk. Tubman's bounty went up to $40,000, but was worth the 300+ slaves she saved. One thing to be noticed is that the abolitionist took advantage of the first amendment, and used civil disobedience as peaceful means of negotiation. The abolitionist movement not only pushed for an end to slavery, but also for equal rights. That idea would inspire the Women's right's Movement.
