There are two main and common ways of practising the art form of cliche verre; the method of using ink or paint and the method of using suet from a burning wax candle.

Method One- Suet from a candle

One method you could use involves using a candle and a glass panel. Taking the panel of glass, place one end of the glass on a flat stable surface and balance the other end on your finger tips. With your free hand reach for your lit wax candle, hold it underneath the glass panel, close enough that the heat and suet from the smoke blackens the glass but not too close that the open flame is touching the glass panel.

A secondary method to use when practising the method of cliche verre involves black acrylic paint, and a paintbrush or sponge and a plastic or glass panel. A plastic panel can also be used in this method for there is no heat component. Taking your paint brush or sponge, completely cover the surface of your plate until it is completely blackened out and light is blocked from going through. Ensure that you cover in even and equal quanities. After this step allow your paint to dry completely before etching in your ideal design.

The Birth of Cliche Verre

Cliche Verre began as a process in the 19th century, first being recorded as a method excuted by a group of french painters. The creative nature of taking a traspasrent surface and then etching and drawing is a fusion of painting and drawing incorporated into the photographic form. The next step in the process involves taking your template and using it in a darkroom with photographic paper and a enlarger. The developing process and chemical process are the same as with standard dark room procedures.

Cliche verre was one of the earliest forms of reproducing images before the rise of the camera. The Method of Cliche Verre meant that the earliest practisers of this time were abe to create this reproductions accurately, without the fear of tonal adjusments and changes.

When practising the method of cliche verre I personally preferred to execute using the second method of black acrlyic paint rather than suet for I found, as a new practitioner of cliche verre, it gave me more room for error. When working with the suet I found, it was more temprimental for, it was easy to smudge off and was more opaque. The acrylic method was less time consuming.

Camile Corot and Jean Francois Millet were french painters who are credited as being one of the few heavy executers of the cliche verre technique around the time of it's birth. Corot and Millet would create cliche eltchings of the landscape and farmers working. The art of doing so reqired paitence, a gentle and precise hand and talent. Many people chose to go down a more abstract root when exploring with Cliche Verre but these images are an example of classical art abilites abnd execution
