DI: Fractions are a way to break apart a whole OR a set into equal pieces.  

Materials: 
Mini Hershey bars
Fun size M&M packets

 Fractions as a whole: Give each student a mini Hershey bar.  Ask: how can this Hershey bar represent a fraction of a whole? Can it represent another fraction? (1/4, ½)  Break them apart.  Show ¼.  Now show ¾.  Would you rather have ¼ or ¾? Why?  
 

Fractions as a set: Fun Fractions with M&Ms binder p. 1-2.  Follow the steps in the organizer.

Review fraction of the day.

 Review that fractions can be shown as a set or a whole.

Whole: Give each student 3 pieces of white paper.  Fold piece one into ½.
Piece two into  ¼.
Piece 3 into 1/8. 
Label fractions you created on each piece of paper.
Think about it!
How could you use the ½ sheet to make ¼?  How can you use the ¼ to make 1/8? 
 
Set: two sided counters.  
1.       Give each student 8 counters to represent given fractions. (5/8, 2/3, ½, etc. 
2. Fractions word problems (linked below).  Use counters to model each fraction.
Smith will use counters to display fractions.  Use your slate to identify each fraction.
