"The New Propaganda"

Edward Bernays makes a point to say that, "the minority has discovered a powerful help in influencing majorities" (Bernays, 2005, p. 47). By this, he means that propaganda is a way that those in minority positions have found a way to influence those in majority positions. Propaganda is a powerful tool created to help each social group. Bernays describes it as, "the executive arm of the invisible government" (Bernays, 2005, p. 48).

"I am aware the word propaganda carries to many minds an unpleasant connotation" (Bernays, 2005, p.48).

Living in our society, hearing the word "propaganda" often is associated with negative images/news. Bernays acknowledges this, but adds that in any situation propaganda may give off a good or bad message depending on the merit of the caused urged or the truth in the information published. He makes a great point in comparing propaganda to other words with technical meanings stating it is, "neither good nor bad but custom makes them so" (Bernays, 2005, p. 48). This is important to know because the intention of propaganda varies depending on each piece.

"Even in a basic sense, business is becoming dependent on public opinion" (Bernays, 2005, p. 85).

Bernays makes a great point saying businesses have been drastically changing over the years. In years past, businesses did not rely on the public when creating product or even as surviving as a company. The public opinion is so important because it can be what is keeping the business afloat. The more consumers enjoy the product or hear good things, they are likely to keep consuming. But, learning about the ethical flaws of a company, the more likely they are to change their mind about a product.

"The voice of the people expresses the mind of the people, and that mind i made up for it by the group leaders in whom it believes and by those persons who understand the manipulation of public opinion" (Bernays, 2005, p. 109).

Bernays goes on to say the public opinion is composed of inherited prejudices, symbols, cliches and verbal formulas supplied to them by those who lead. I do not think the "voice of the people" will ever truly be heard because of all the differing opinions and skewed understandings.

"Women's most obvious influence is exerted when they are organized and armed with the weapon of propaganda" (Bernays, 2005, p. 129).

When women are most armed and organized, they have the power to influence city councils, state legislators, national congress and very high national leaders. Although women have achieved a legal equality with men, that does not mean they take place in identical activities. Bernays elaborates on women in political positions stating, "...women today occupy a much more important position, from the standpoint of their influence, in their organized groups than from the actual political positions or in actual office holding" (Bernays, 2005, p. 129). He believes that propaganda was a contributing reason why the suffrage campaign worked. With the organized groups of contributing women, they used the power of propaganda to make history.
