At the beginning of the work we see Theseus, the Duke of Athens, preparing a great festival on the occasion of his imminent wedding to Hippolyta. The preparations are interrupted by Aegean, a nobleman, who enters the scene accompanied by Hermia, his daughter; Lysander, the man she loves; and Demetrius, who loves Hermia, but is not reciprocated by her. Aegeo wants her daughter to marry Demetrius and not Lisander, just as she wants. Then, he begs Theseus to enforce the law of Athens that imposes that parents have the power to marry their daughters according to their designs. The duke agrees with Aegean and offers three options to Hermia: either he marries Demetrius, as his father wishes, or he submits to chastity forever, or he suffers the death penalty. Then, Theseus leaves the scene with Demetrius, Aegean and Hippolyta, leaving Hermia and Lysander alone. Then, Lisander quickly convinces Hermia to escape into the forest at night and marry there, where the law of Athens cannot reach them. She accepts the plan.

Elena enters the scene, lamenting that Demetrio only has eyes for Hermia, despite the fact that she loves him much more than her friend could. Lisandro tells him not to worry, since he and Hermia will escape that night. Elena affirms, in a soliloquy, that she will tell Demetrius about Lisandro and Hermia's plans, trusting that this will help Demetrius love her
