I started in Financial Aid back in 2007 (at a different school). At the time, I was desperately job searching and went to this interview and just blew it out of the water and was offered a job on the spot. I did not have any understanding of Financial Aid at the time, so what led me to work in the field was the feeling of being wanted and a paycheck. But what has kept me in the field is learning all the quirks of FA and being able to figure out solutions to keep people in school and get their education. At the end of the day, seeing the success of our students is what keeps me working in the field.

 Describe one of your favorite work memories.
 
One of my favorite memories here at Stanford involves my previous role as Loan Coordinator. I have had a great time presenting Loan Exit Counseling to our students at the end of each school year and being able to interact with them and help them out with questions they have about repaying their loans.

 
What would you do if you were gifted a million dollars, no strings attached?

Fiscally responsible stuff (I try to tell myself): pay off all my debts, make sure my kids have no concerns for paying for college. And I would take my wife on a European/UK trip. Whatever is left over I would donate. (Although, I am probably just fooling myself, and would probably spend it all like crazy. 😊 )
 
What is one hobby you would love to get into?
 
I would love to play live music. But I think it would help to be able to play an instrument first. So, I think first I must get into learning an instrument.

I’ve always wanted to try skiing and surfing on the same day! I don’t know how to surf yet, so realistically speaking, I’d probably go snorkeling instead. I could look at fish all day.

What are the top three items on your bucket list
  1. Land all my single rotation jumps in figure skating (I have many skating-related goals!)
  2. Finally be able to do a full front split 
  3. Be an extra in a movie (fun fact: my mom’s 1986 Toyota Camry has been in a few TV shows)

List two pet peeves.
  1. When I’m trying to read in peace and people ask what I’m reading.  
  2. When I’m washing dishes and my sleeves get wet. 

What is your favorite cereal?

  • I think my puppy, Bruno, matches my personality because he is a high energy dog.

  • My favorite musical artist has to be Bad Bunny.

  • I am a cereal lover, so any kind works for me except for plan cheerios. I like to load my cereal with bananas.

    Watching Asher discover the world around him and develop his own little personality. He is such a smiley guy and everything is fascinating to him--plants, paintings, books, shadows, and especially faces. It makes me slow down to focus on and appreciate all the little things.

    What is your favorite memory of Asher so far?
    This is tough! Probably the first time he really laughed. I was blowing raspberries on his tummy and cheeks, which usually meant lots of sweet smiling. Then all of a sudden he let out a chuckle, which turned into a laugh, which just about melted my heart. Making him laugh has become the best part of every day.

    What advice would you give to new parents?
    I'm still so new at this that it doesn't feel like I should be giving anyone advice! But some things that have helped me: push yourself to get out of the house in those first few weeks. Seek out help and counsel from professionals and people you trust--avoid Googling concerns or looking for advice online. And when every little decision feels so high stakes, try to take a step back and keep perspective.
