The purpose of this documentary was to bring awareness to how captivity affects animals and to examine how captivity can lead to aggressive behavior in whales. The director achieved the purpose through the use of commercials, interviews, actual footage, and facts. The main focus of the documentary was on the whale Tilikum, who had a record of aggressive behavior.

Achieving the Purpose

The film achieved the purpose of examining how captivity can lead to aggressive behavior through juxtaposition and pathos. Juxtaposition was used when the documentary would shift from a positive Sea World commercial to a tragedy that happened involving the whales in captivity. Pathos was used in the documentary in multiple scenes. One example was when they showed a baby whale being taken away from her family in the wild. This caused the audience to feel heart-broken because the whale would never see their family again. Bias may have played a role by only showing the negative side of Sea World. They failed to view the other side.

Conclusion

After watching the film, we realized how similar whales are to humans through their emotional capacity and life spans. The movie shed light onto the horrors of captivity and the trauma it causes for the whales. Based on the documentary, we felt as is the captivity of animals should no longer continue. The film gave us a new perspective on the negative affects that captivity has on an animal. If places are holding animals for monetary purposes, they should be closed down. However, some zoos are used to save animals in danger. If that is the case, then they are helping the animals and can be kept open.
