Leather is a high-impact material primarily made from animal hides, most commonly from cows, and consists of collagen fibers that are treated through a tanning process to enhance durability and prevent decomposition.

The production process involves several stages: preparing the hides through salting or freezing, tanning them with chemicals like chromium salts to stabilize them, and finishing with dyeing, coating, and buffing to improve their appearance and durability.

Unfortunately, leather production is resource-intensive, requiring large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals, while livestock farming for leather contributes to deforestation, land degradation, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Leather is widely used in fashion (shoes, bags, and clothing), furniture, automotive interiors, and accessories, with luxury brands like Hermès, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton prominently using leather in their products.

Despite its durability and aesthetic appeal, the environmental impact of leather production has led to the exploration of more sustainable alternatives, including vegetable-tanning processes and plant-based or mycelium-based leathers.

Composition & Production Process:

Made from animal hides, primarily sourced from the meat industry.

Tanning is a critical step in leather production, with chrome tanning being the most common method. It involves using heavy chemicals like chromium salts to preserve the hides, giving them flexibility and durability.

Pollution: The tanning process generates toxic wastewater that contaminates nearby ecosystems.
High Water Usage: Traditional leather production requires vast amounts of water, particularly in the tanning and dyeing stages.

Carbon Emissions: Raising livestock for hides contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
