Although labelled unmanly at the time, this hobby of collecting and observing would eventually help me with my studies on the fundamentals of geology. I was the geology backbone and provided geological and fossil evidence to support Darwin’s theory of natural selection. 

At age 19, I entered Oxford University, which stimulated my interest in geology. Although I went on to study and practice law, with my father’s financial support, I was able to focus my attention on geology and publish my first paper in 1825. In 1830, I published the Principles of Geology, which challenged the theory of catastrophism and revolutionized geology by pushing for the acceptance of the theory of uniformitarianism. 

I found evidence travelling through Europe of the rise and fall of sea levels, the existence of volcanoes on top of older rocks, and how valleys were formed slowly from water and wind erosion rather than catastrophic floods.  This evidence supports my theory that slow and gradual processes that are constant and eternal have produced the geological features on Earth, which proves that the Earth must be very old. An ancient Earth supports that species have evolved through millions of years and gone through numerous generations of survival of the fittest, allowing for adaptation to occur as the most suitable traits for a species’ environment within their genetic variation have a higher chance of being passed on, supporting Darwin’s theory of natural selection. 

Ultimately, I have not only made significant contributions to the field of geology but also to the study of evolution.

I observed the similarities between chimpanzee and human skeletons with Mr. Leakey, and we concluded that humans and chimpanzees came from a common ancestor, which is why I begun studying chimpanzees in the first place. Your theory gives a possible explanation for how the common ancestors of both chimpanzees and humans evolved into 2 different species through gradual changes in their environment providing selective pressures. However, as a more modern scientist, I would have to wonder would your theory of gradual changes in nature occurring with same intensity hold true with the effects of climate change on earth?
