Hi! My name is Sophie Brown and this is my first year at Derryfield. I chose photography because my mom loves photography and she is always taking photos and I want to learn more about cameras and photography so I can also take photos with her. I love photography because there is so many ways you can express yourself in each photo. Besides photography, I love playing soccer, tennis, skiing and running. I have played tennis for five years and I am doing it this year for the Derryfield team.

One of my favorite photographers is Ansel Adams because he shows the beauty of nature through every angle and composition. He uses contrast to emphasis certain details in his compositions. For example, in the picture below the river is white and the snow on the top of the mountain is white and the rest of the composition is black. This gives an emphasis on the river and the snow on the mountain to direct the readers eye to this.

For this composition, I decided to have the bright yellow line be the vocal point. I intended for the reader's eye to go down the line, which also makes you focus on the tires of the jeep. For a dog's eye point of perspective, I put my phone the ground and took many photos at different angles and I felt this composition really reflected what a dog's eye view is.

Yes! Love the bright FOCAL point (not vocal :) ). There is a little bit of a wash out in the upper right hand corner. Perhaps doing a bit of editing in an app could help disguise that (decreasing your exposure, increasing contrast, and adding a bit of texture).

Over vacation, I went on many hiking trips. On this one hiking trip I took, I saw hundreds of letters and faces that were just from nature. For this composition, I saw the letter T from one tree that had fallen over and the other tree was holding it from one single branch. I thought this was very interesting because the fallen over tree makes your eye look from one side all the way across to the other. It shows movement. Both of these tree's show what it means to see things differently, and how each person has many different perspectives on what they are seeing.

Since this weekend was very warm and nice, my brother and I decided to go skateboarding. We haven't gone in awhile and we though this would be a perfect oppertunity while were in quarentine. I noticed that when my brother was skateboarding , that a picture could make him look frozen in time. In this composition, I wanted to show that even though he was riding fast, you can always get a clear, detailed image. I wanted my brother to be in the middle of the screen so the emphasis was on him and the skateboard. I added a filter on the photo, to make it more pleasing to the eye and lighter. Also, the blue color of the skateboard put attention to the fact he is skateboarding.

Digital Sketchbook #8: Blur the boundaries

In my house, my mom keeps flowers near our window still, and I thought this would create the picture dreamy and blurry boundary. I took this picture on my phone with the portrait mode on. This composition, I wanted to take a picture of a beautiful white flower, so the light in the background would make it seem almost magical, and unreal. With the white, and light in the background, the yellow and orange color of the flower popped. I loved learning more about blurring the boundaries, because it creates so much emphasis , which is very important in photography.

My plan for the double exposure, is for my mom to take a picture of me, and i look sad in it, and then have hateful words around my head, to create a message, and than hvae a dark background behind me. My plan for the color, is to take a picture of my white shoes on someone, and then add colors to them, and then have a really dark background to create emphasis.

Is their a final presentation we have to do on this?
Is this the last project?

In Amherst, all of the apple trees are blooming. They look very beautiful, and I thought this would be the perfect subject for my macro Image. For this composition, I found a tree that had low enough branches that I could get close to. I think the colors really enhance this image, and make it look more appealing. Recently, I got the Iphone 11, and the camera quality really helped with the quality of the photograph.

Digital Sketchbook #10: Become Invisible

At my house, my younger brother,John, is always playing video games. When he is playing video games with his headset on, it is almost like he is blocking out the whole world around him. I thought this would make a perfect, "Become invisible," composition, because he is very occupied in his computer, and I can easily sneak in and take a picture. For this composition , I decided to take the photo from a dog's eye point of view, and from a side angle. This gives the composition more character to it, and gives a perspective that you wouldn't normally see. I edited this photo on my phone, and made the exposure higher, and added contrast.
