After graduating his adviser and mentor, Andy van Dam, encouraged him to get his Ph. D and become a professor. He applied to Carnegie Mellon and got rejected. Andy van Dam offered to call over, but Pausch said no and went to see the schools that did accept him, but they were not a good fit. Andy van Dam called the head of the computer science department to get Randy an interview. He eventually was accepted after an interview and another review of his application.
