The finches of Daphne Major were adapted to the soft seeds known as the Portulaca seeds. When the count of the Portulaca seeds began to decrease, the finches were not adapted to the other food source, the tougher Tribulus seeds. This means that the finches with thin beaks would die out and wouldn't reproduce anymore, The small amount of finches with beaks that were strong enough to eat the Tribulus seeds were able to survive and reproduce. This supports natural selection, as natural selection has to do with how organisms adapt to environmental changes.

The drought that occured on Daphne Major caused the Portulaca seeds to decrease in numbers because they are less resistant than and need more water than the Tribulus seeds. When the environment changed, so did the population of the finches. They needed to have stronger beaks, which was possible due to natural selection and adaptations.

The population count started decreasing because of the change in what seeds were available to the finches. The finches were adapted to the ones that were decreasing, so they died out quickly. The population of finches did not die out completely though. Rare finches with beaks that are tougher and able to eat the seeds that were available were able to survive. They reproduced, and now the population of finches with tougher beaks increased. This is known as the finches being more 'fit' for the environment. After the drought was over and the island went back to normal, the population of finches increased and most of the population had a different beak size. The Portulaca seed count increased once again, so the population was thriving like before. Without the drought, the seed count wouldn't have changed, and without the seed count changing, the finches wouldn't have adapted to the new conditions in their habitat and wouldn't have had tougher beaks.
