The gas causes the explosion, because of the
pressure that they've built up over tens to hundreds of thousand years ago.
An example of this phenomena is the crater on the Yamal Peninsula in Russia, this explosion was discovered in 2014, and there have been 16 more explosions documented. This explosion affected the landscape by leaving a big crater in the ground.
