Week 13: Bouncing Back

This week, I focused on how I would bounce back when things go wrong. I never thought of it the way I do now, I always thought it was just a natural reaction, that we hurt for a bit, then recover, but there’s so much more to it than that. You really have to have a positive mindset and tell yourself that everything will get better, because if you don't, it never will and you'll be stuck on it. I can say from experience that that's happened to me many times and it took me a while to finally figure it out. I discovered what I should do, and what I now do, which is I let it hurt for a little bit, but I don’t spend too much time on it. Change is natural, and we have to adapt to it in order to survive.

Week 12: Stress Causes

This week, I focused on what causes my stress and how to properly manage it. By reading a few articles, I found out different ways to calm myself down and manage my different levels of stress. It included giving myself time and space, not over-scheduling, and finding what I love to do. I also was able to identify what mainly caused my stress, that included my parents, school, relationships, and public speaking. A question I have would be what could or should I do if the previous list didn’t work? What if I’m SO stressed that I can’t even help myself? Do I ask someone else for help? I’ll definitely research that so I never feel backed into a corner when I get stressed from certain situations.

Week 11: How am I Feeling?

This week, I focused a lot on my feelings and my stress-causers. I read how to manage certain emotions and not react too harshly to situations that I may or may not have control over. Something I would do differently is 11.3 (Community Mental Health Services). I would add a few more people to that list like my dad, and my brother Tim. What I’m going to use from this lesson were the steps to analyze an emotion and how to overcome it. (What am I feeling? When did it start? What does it make me want to do? What were the triggers for this emotion? What pictures come to mind as I feel it? When else have I felt it?)

This week, I really had to think about my future and what I want for myself. My goal is to enlist into the Marines, and then move to Colorado afterward. I’m not sure how long I would enlist for, but I don’t think for too long, I still have to figure that out but it’s definitely what I want to do. I wonder though, after I’m out of the Marines, what I would do. Maybe I would become a police officer or a firefighter, but I just know that I don’t want to go to college at all. I’ve always hated school and I probably couldn’t handle anymore of it.

This week, I read a scenario where I would have to choose between doing the right thing and doing what’s best for me, and what factors I’ve faced in a moral dilemma. Those factors including what I think is best for me, what I think is the right thing to do, and how it’ll affect another person. I learned about what my peers would do, and it was surprising how many of them would do what was the right thing rather than what was best for themselves. Naturally, we make decisions based on our emotions, and that tends to cloud someone's judgment in different situations.

Week 8: The Cost of Living

This week, my peers and I discussed a scenario on what we would do if a Walmart cashier handed us a $10 bill instead of a $1 bill for our change. A lot of people said they’d say something and give it back, but I think in the moment a lot of people wouldn’t do that, including me. But much smaller businesses can get employees in a lot of trouble for giving the wrong amount of change. If it were $100, I would definitely say something but not so much for $10. Next I interviewed my dad and friend Felicity on a short story about a fisherman and what they would regret if they died tomorrow. I also wrote a list of my needs and wants to see what I actually did or didn’t need to survive. I could cut off a lot of things to save money every month, like my spotify payments and unnecessary shopping trips. In conclusion, I thought about the cost of living and what I really do and don't need.

This week, I discussed with my classmates what I would do in a situation that involved my friend and his wife cheating. Personally, I would tell my friend but not directly about the email. To save my own job, I would tell them that there’s suspicious activity going on with his wife and maybe he should look into it but to not tell anyone that he heard it from me. I wouldn’t tell him about the email because it could put my job in danger and I need to support my family which would come first. Next, I interviewed someone I admired, my mom, and asked her who she admired as she was growing up. I also wrote a list of people who I admired and looked up to, then initially chose one of them to write a report on. I chose Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL who has of most confirmed kills.

I then discussed with my group how we want to make a presentation and what we want to put on it. Next, I learned about Maslow and his Hierarchy of needs. I wrote reflective paragraphs comparing and contrasting the new versions of the needs and the original. I interviewed my mom and asked her what it’s like being a leader since she’s a teacher and leads and influences kids every day. I then continued working on my group project and picked my top 5 values and shared them with my group to compare and see what they thought were the top 5. To continue the “living the dream” work, I picked my dream job, the armed forces, and researched it depth, then wrote reflective paragraphs on it.

I then interviewed my best friend Felicity and asked her what the qualities of being an effective friend were. Following that, I created a list from most important to least of what I believe are the most important core values to have. My list included; freedom, love, discretion, loyalty, self-control, happiness, calmness, patriotism, restraint, and preparedness. Lastly, I wrote a list of 5 positive and 5 negative influences in my life.

I, of course, chose to stay home with my sibling, because family always comes first to me and I could always go to another concert. I then interviewed my sister, Hannah and asked her what it was like being a sibling or a friend. I took a personality test and posted 10 positive traits about myself, then replied to one of my classmates. Lastly, I made a collage of different images that described myself which I think turned out pretty well.

Next, I did another parent interview, and this time I interviewed my mom, asking her what the qualities of being an effective parent are. She answered by saying one would have to be patient, sensitive, and strict. Finally, I was assigned to write a list of 10 things I am doing currently, in which I answered by including the firehouse, cooking, chores, taking care of pets, school, going out with friends, driving, free time, running and family.

I always thought I was more of the outsider/black sheep of the family since I always did my own thing and stuck to myself. I also interviewed my dad and asked him questions related to what it is like being a parent/guardian. Including, the challenges and rewards. Lastly, I had to think about 3 occupations that I admired while growing up and why. I chose a firefighter, the military, and a lawyer. Along with that, I had to think of WHO I admired as a child, which whom I chose my father.
