I can't get off my need for early on relationship building, though, because I am obsessed with this metaphor of learning being like driving a car together. First we have to build the car, and relationships are a key part. The better and earlier we build the car with all its parts, the faster and smoother we can drive our learning, so theoretically the time evens out.

I am afraid that framing science around social justice will teach students to view science as a thing that tells them awful stuff, because of the systemic forces that often prevent my students from taking meaningful action on the issues. Maybe I'm just too cynical about the possibility of change.
The point is, I want students to also feel the inherent wonder of science, of learning something that is unobservable to the naked eye, or ear, or nose. I believe that there is a way to weave the two together, the painful process of social justice and the beauty of science. I just haven't zeroed in on it yet.
