The writer describes the sea as powerful by using the Adjective "fierce breaker" the writer suggests that the sea is quick causing the surfers to be skilled to master this board breaking sport.
The theme presented here is man vs nature. This is shown with the quote "fierce breaker" as it shows us that the sea (nature) is dominating man (the surfers) so that they cant enter/ compete in the surfing sport.

secondly, The writer uses a simile to suggest the number of heads bobbing in and out. "number of heads bobbing out like corks in smooth water". The adjective "corks" portrays that the surfers cannot handle the fierceness that the sea is throwing at them which causes them to laydown and surrender.

Thirdly, The writer uses an adverb to show us that the surfers are amazing at riding the sea. "rode in majestically". The adjective "majestically" tells us that the surfers consider themselves the king of the sea so they are all Neptune and control the will of the sea.

Firstly, The writer describes the sea as powerful by using an adjective, 'fierce breaker' this phrase symbolism the sea is powerful, quick and surfers could manage the sea. Another use of an adjective by the writer but to describe the surfers 'Majestically', this word describes how the surfers feel when on their boards like the kings of the sea.

Secondly, The writer uses a simile to describes the surfers in the sea, 'Number of heads bobbing like corks'. The use of the simile helps the reader imagine whats going on in their head and brings it to life.

Both writers have a positive view on surfing, however in source A Doyle is more appreciative of the sport whereas in Source B Bird is more weary of surfing.

Firstly the writer of source A recalls how as a young boy he was "dazzled" by the spectacle of surfing. He uses a metaphor to describe the "bronzed gods" which suggests that he loved to see people surfing which is how he got into the sport. However Bird enjoys the spectacle of surfing but is content to remain a spectator. "I held my breath in terror" here she uses first person to emphasise the shock and also the excitement of surfing. The verb "terror" suggests that because she has never seen the sport before she does not know what to expect, which is the complete opposite to Doyle in source A.

secondly, both sources describe the material that is needed to create the surf boards. In source B Bird informs us how she feels about the surf boards ."coffin lid" this tells us that she feels as if surfing is a bringer of death. she also gives us a religious aspect to surfing as she states " a wood from the native breadfruit tree, then blessed in a simple ritual".

Where as Isabella Bird would rather watch and like to watch them.

Firstly, In source A the writer has a more of a happier mood and a passionate tone. He describes him as a young boy being 'Dazzled', he uses a metaphor to describe how the surfers looked 'bronzed gods', this quote implies he loved how they looked and that's why he fell in love with the sport of surfing at such a young age. He also uses triplets to describe how they looked, 'good shape, happier and healthier' this quote suggests how good the surfers looked after they bodies and cared about their personal image. Another technique the writer uses is facts, '11 feet long, 24 inches wide, weighed 50 or 60 pounds'.

Secondly, in source B, Bird describes the surfing boards 'coffin lid', this quote suggest how she feels about the sport equipment, a type of death. Bird is quite happy to just relax and enjoy spectating the surfers. The ton of this extract is very mellow.

However Doyle in source B is willing to participate straight away "as if I was there on the board myself". but Bird is only wanting to spectate the surfers "went down to the beach to enjoy". Doyle uses a metaphor "bronzed gods" this suggests that he sees them as supernatural and they control like Neptune (Greek god). This source has a admirable tone which the writer has created. Doyle enjoys to take part in the surfing "I managed to paddle" where as Bird is spectating which has an entertaining tone. Bird describes the surfers as "legions" seeing them as an army which is coordinated whereas in source A it only a small amount of surfers which are riding randomly "some dozen".

The metaphor "bronzed gods" implies that you have to be look like a god to surfer. "Gods" suggests that the surfers control the sea and are invincible. However, in source B the writer is more describing the sea. The adjective "verge of engulfment" implies that the sea is hunting the surfers and trying to swallow the surfers. The word "engulfment" suggests the sea is going to cover the surfers.

In source A the writer is talking about how he has learning how to surf. "completely panicked" this suggests that he is in expedients and doesn't know what to do next. the word "panicked" implies that he is scared of what is going to happen next. However, in source B the writer is looking forward to watch the show. "Grand display" suggests that the professionals are going out to surf. the word "grand" implies that the surfers are going to put on a impressive display.

In source A the writer is very keen to go to the beach when ever he can. "As much time as I'd spent at the beach" this suggests that the young boy is in love with the sport surfing.

source A tells us that the boards are "much lighter and much better balsa wood boards were just starting to appear" inferring that they are developing better ways to surf. In source B however they tell us that the boards are from the "Native breadfruit tree" and are "blessed in a simple ritual" which gives us a religious aspect. surfing is apart of the culture heritage of Hawaii which is why they stick to traditional and custom surrounding the boards whereas in California, surfing is a competitive sport so people want to develop better boards to give them an edge.
Also their detailed descriptions of each board are different. In source A Doyle tells us that the boards were "11 feet long, 24 inches wide and weighed 50 or 60 pounds" the fact that he used measurements shows us that he takes pride in knowing everything about the boards and knows the exact measurements. wheres as in source B Bird says "about two feet broad and from six to nine feet long" this tells us that she doesn't know anything about surfing and is just giving an estimate. which shows how different the sources are.
