I chose this movie poster to represent how much people adored Cleopatra. Here, Casear and Anthony are worshipping her and she lies down. Many people worshipped Cleopatra and thought she was so beautiful. Others did not care for her and did not like the way she manipulated people into getting what she wanted. This image also is a stereotypical look at Cleopatra because everyone thought she was this great ruler who was kind, smart, and beautiful, but on the other hand, she was not like that at all.

I chose this image from the one Cleopatra movie because it looks as though Cleopatra is planning something and she is telling Antony what her plan is. She looks like she is trying to be seductive towards Antony so he will follow her plan. Antony just has a blank look on his face but he also looks mad, this could mean that he is buying what cleopatra is saying and he is about to act on it. Cleopatra also has a little smirk by her mouth so she could be happy that her plan is going to work out the way she wanted it to. This image really makes Cleopatra look as though she is in charge of their relationship and Antony just follows her orders.

I chose this image because it shows just how luxuriously Cleopatra is portrayed. As a Queen of Egypt this picture shows her on a throne holding two scepters. She is also accompanied by two cheetahs which are exotic animals therefor showing just how rich and powerful she was. It is also one of the first photos I saw that portrayed her as dark skinned while most pictures or any kind of advertisement portrayed her as white.

Here in this photo, it is seen that Cleopatra is portrayed as a beautiful woman who is seemed to be put on a pedestal by all of those around. The ones who view her in this light are the Egyptians, since she is a powerful ruler who does not rely heavily on the guidance of a man. This differs from the Roman perspective since Cleopatra does not follow through with the proper feminine duties that are expected of a woman. Romans believe that only the men should take charger and leave the women to be insignificant and not partake in the life outside of caring for their home and children. I chose this to reveal how loyal the Egyptians were to their rulers. They valued that Cleopatra was one who did not follow the orders of what would normally be expected and that she represented the power of women. Even though she was seen as a powerless threat because of her gender, by some people, Cleopatra did all she could not to let others dominate.

I chose this source because it is really recent. When first discussing Cleopatra, the first image that came to mind was Katy Perry's portrayal of her in the son "Dark Horse". Throughout the music video, Katy Perry shows different situations of men offering her things like gems, food, and wonders and in every instance she kills them and turns them into she seems more desirable. Katy Perry focus on Cleopatra's legend of being a beautiful and supreme ruler and takes it to extremes. She focuses on Cleopatra's ultimate beautiful and ultimate power. An extreme Katy Perry takes Cleopatra's image to is the detail of Cleopatra having magic. This is an extension of showing the immense power Cleopatra had.

This is an artistic representation of Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. I originally chose this image because I was looking for the classic image of Cleopatra that I grew up knowing. I saw this as the classic image she has with an artistic twist with a mixed media mosaic. In this image (and Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra) the description of Cleopatra being beautiful is strongly represented, and I think the mosaic form of the image helps to promote that. With all of the different ways Cleopatra's look/description is represented, I thought it was interesting that this is the classic one that has always been how I pictured her.

While sifting through images of Cleopatra, I chose this painting because of the unconventional feeling of the Ancient Egyptian queen which it gives. At first, I thought her gaze looked unimpressed, angry, and judgmental. Cleopatra is sat back in her throne, hand on a stone animal (it appears chiseled like stone), as she looks intently at something below her. She is adorned in gold and draped clothing, while animal fabrics and pillows surround her. Cleopatra's downward gaze indicates that she is in a superior position to the subject of her gaze. Considering all aspects, I believe this image was meant to evoke feelings of intimidation in the viewer.

This painting by Claude Vignon is a representation of Cleopatra's suicide as told by Shakespeare. There is a popular stereotype that Cleopatra committed suicide by the venomous bite of a snake due to the ending of Shakespeare's tragic play "Antony and Cleopatra", however, in reality, the manner in which Cleopatra committed suicide is unknown. There is a possibility that she did use a snake to kill herself, but the more likely and historically accurate version was using normal poison so that she did not have to die painfully. In this painting we can see that Cleopatra suffering due to the bite of the snake and that she is considerably white. Firstly, I think that it is imperative that we take note of Cleopatra's physical beauty in this portrait as the painter is clearly trying to convey that Cleopatra herself was a very beautiful woman that could have seduced anyone. I also think that it is a physical representation of her lineage as she was a Ptolemy, who were originally Macedonian by birth, making them have fairer features than the pharaohs of old. The fact that she is in pain in this painting does give an element of reality to her suicide that if she did use a snake it would be very painful, and a very unlikely way to go as why should the pharaoh suffer in her last moments when she had more than enough wealth and resources to create a more painless death.

She is dressed extravagantly and it also shows the man, Mark Antony, also dress extravagantly. It seems as though Antony is entranced by Cleopatra, just by the way he is looking at her hand and the way she is looking at him.

I chose this image of Cleopatra because she doesn't look like she does in the Egyptian depictions of herself. She looks more Greek/Roman here (to me), which I think shows how connected she was elsewehere, through Mark Antony and Ceasar. She still looks regal, but she looks less powerful or intimidating than other Egyptian depictions of her. She also looks very focused in this, though it isn't clear what she is looking at. I think this image shows how she was serious and focused, yet her youth and beauty shows how she attracted other men of power. The jewels she is wearing also show her wealth and success as a ruler, as Mark Antony needed her for her wealth originally.

--Zoe Deenihan

I chose this picture because it was a film I had previously known about. This image depicts Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra in the film and she looks very regal with her headdress on.

I chose this photo because it’s really I tuned with a pop culture image of cleopatra. This is in the dark horse music video. You get the big head dresses and the great color but in the video you get the personality that cleopatra May have had such as being super needy and high maintenance

She is pictured with her headdress with the snake. She has a lot of gold accents and big earrings. This bust also has a lot of detail on her clothing and her face also has a lot of detail.
