Post one question you have about the collections and needs of the Kendal Young Library that will assist you in developing the Interpretive Plan.
Be sure that your question is unique(not a duplication of another student question) and one that is not already answered in the posted materials (such as "What is the KYL mission?").

Hello Kendall Young Library:
I am looking forward to working with my group to develop content for your institution. I briefly read about your library without diving too deep because I want to save some of the information for our project. I have a few questions that I came up with about your library.

1) What was the turning point for your library? How did this library begin and why in Webster City?

2) How did the library grow to become one of the most recognized libraries in the state of Iowa?

3) I was looking on the homepage and saw that the library has four main collections. How did these collections come about? How did you acquire them? Is there a collection that is your most prominent one out of the four? Does your library want more focus on one exhibit/collection than another?

4) How can we help attract a younger audience to learn more about the library?

*I was thinking of doing short informational blog posts on Webster City, Kendall Young Library, and the collections/exhibits on display. I was also thinking of doing "Fun Fact Friday" posts to hypothetically be posted on social media. If so, I 'd love to go this route for my part with my team.

Hello Kendall Young Library,

After looking through the various resources that have been provided to us, I have a couple of logistical questions for you in regards to your institution, and your public audience/readership.

As far as you can provide, what are the annual statistics about your community’s lending behavior? Do you have information about your general readership/checkout patterns? What percentages can you provide about your demographics in terms of age/ other factors?

You also list several community events aimed at adults, specifically your Adult Movie program, your DIY Club, and your Noon Book Discussion. What is the attendance like at these events? Are these films/books selected by the community or by a Board? How often are these events cancelled due to poor attendance?

I am also extremely interested in the KY Library’s relationship to the City Archives. Are the archives onsite? Are these archives digitized/accessible at the library? How often/ do you have a member of staff that communicates with the city/county archivist?

Thank you in advance for your time. I look forward to working with you in the near future.

Hi, Kendall Young Library staff -

I found your website and social media profiles quite interesting, but I did have some questions in relation to how you choose content for both platforms.

1. In regards to your collections of non-book items (such as your Native American art and dolls collections), do you have detailed research on some or all of the objects? If you do, why did you choose to exclude some of that information from your website? Are there certain Native groups local to your area that could assess the Native objects?

2. What is your purpose in having a Pinterest account? Are you trying to showcase recent titles your library has acquired and/or have a presence on a platform that many people use? Why do you exclude pins about your non-book objects? You could link the photos to your site (if it has more information about the objects on it)

I look forward to visiting the KYL and working with your staff in the future!

Hello, Kendall Young Library staff

1. I noticed your digital archives page on the website and I was wondering how many more newspapers you have in your archives that need to be digitized?

2. I was reading the Iowa Initiative for sustainable communities article, it mentions how in 2011 Electrolux and other major businesses fell apart it had an adverse affect on Webster city as a whole. Were your outreach strategies, library policies, and digitization efforts significantly altered during this time period? Did you find new ways to make the library successful or did you conserve resources and wait until new partners such as H.E.R.O and prestige farms come into play?

Thank you for answering I am looking forward to check out the library and collaborate with you on the project.

Hello!

I loved looking through the different social media pages and the bit of introduction material we were given. One of my first questions was if there is a notable part of the regular (daily through around an every other month frequency) users with accessibility concerns to be aware of? I am just thinking if there is like a deaf, blind, or physically impaired population local that might have different requirements for how to engage with your digital and physical spaces. This is just a topic in multiple of my courses right now - hopefully something we can address well if this is a concern for library goers.

I was struggling to find the right spot to look for more information - do you have more programming/content turn around during school breaks? I saw that there are events quite often - averaging around every 3 or 4 days and covered a lot of different audiences. I couldn't find though if during a time like winter break - there was more programming for children/teens who now have their days wide open.

Was there also a reason that the YouTube channel appears to have stopped being utilized? The most recent video I saw was timestamped 2 years ago.

Thank you so much! I look forward to seeing what we can come up with for the library.

I was intrigued by the use of social media and the content chosen to be published on each platform: Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube. When you have content to share, is there a method as to which platform is best to reach your viewers? If you create a YouTube video, does that video get shared on the Facebook page as well as Pinterest? Or do you find it beneficial to keep the content separate on each platform?

There seems to be a lot of content on your social media promoting book recommendations (Pinterest), How To tutorials (YouTube), and promotions of events (Facebook). Have you considered advertising or promoting your special collections through social media? I can imagine short videos with interviews from staff speaking about the objects and importance they hold would help increase use and visitation to this important resource within the library.

Lastly, regarding your social media usage, is there a particular population of people that you are attempting to reach? Based on your current social media use, do you find one platform to be most successful? If so, how do you measure that success?

Online I found a list of staff members and a lot of information regarding collections development, but I didn't find much of a description on the processes of collection management after acquisition. My questions are geared towards collections management and staffing, and also to the digitization of management and the digitization of the collection itself.

1. Is there a collections department that is separate from the librarians? If so, How is the collections department staffed? How do tasks differ among staff members?

2. Are collections managed digitally? How could the management of collections at KYL be further digitized, if at all?

Have you ever considered giving the special collections their own page on the KYL website?

2. Is there any interest in using current social media platforms to feature items from the special collections?

3. Is there any interest in adding to/changing the library's current approach to social media? There isn't an immediate to link on the website to the library's Instagram account and I'm curious about the choice to highlight Pinterest or YouTube over Instagram, which is more frequently updated.

4. Has the library approached/been approached by the community's Diversity Taskforce to look at how the special collections might be utilized or added to in order to better serve the community?

Hello, everyone! This seems like an interesting space to learn about with an eclectic combination of collections.

Question: one thing I noticed while browsing the main site and then further explored a couple of different devices is that it doesn't seem to be mobile-responsive at all. If you view it on your phone, you have the page displayed exactly as on a computer, and so need to zoom in in order to read anything. While the main functions of the site still seem to perform, this seems like it could be a challenge to use, especially in the modern era of cellphones as primary internet sources. Are there any plans to update the website for a variety of platforms in the works? How much of a priority is keeping up the website, and do you monitor how much it gets used? How popular are the eMaterials (like the ebooks and emagazines) and how does it compare to the overall usership of library resources? Do you track demographics?

Thank you.

1. For this project, what specific audience are you looking to attract? Lots of people use libraries, from young schools kids to adult researchers, and the digital strategies used to engage with these different demographics will be different. For example, a younger demographic might appreciate an interactive digital project (such as an online scavenger hunt), while an older demographic might lean towards a more traditional approach (such as a short slide show about a specific collection). In order to create product that best serves KYL's needs, I think it will be helpful to know which audience we should be trying to cater to.

I think special collections are considerably more useful when some or all of the exact items are available to see before visiting the museum.
