Dear Colonel William Tunner,
I am writing this to you to address an issue of growing concern. Our men are being sent away to war, but who is left to take their place? Who will do their jobs? They need equipment, food, a way to transport personnel. I came to you because you are the head of the ferrying department. I ask you to consider the possibility of having women help by doing the men's jobs. This program will begin as a test trial. However, I do not think your time will be wasted. This program will not only change our military status, but the way men think of women as a whole.

These women will be selected by Robert Love and I. We have already found 49 women capable of becoming a part of the Women Ferrying Squadron. As I have already helped Robert Love head the men's ferrying program, I am sure that this will be a success. Also, I will not have to train these girls like the men. These women will have to have a flying license and have flown at least 500 hours. I ask you once again to please consider this. This ferrying service will be beneficial to America and to the military effort.

You will not regret allowing this program to take place. You can take my word for it, it will help. I am a firm believer that women are as strong as men, and can do what they do as well or better. Thank you for considering, and I encourage you to accept my request.

Sincerely,
Nancy Harkness Love

Dear Nancy Harkness Love,
I understand your concern about not having enough men fighting overseas. This could be a great idea, but it could also fail. However, I am willing to take this risk. This comes with a lot of freedom for you to decide what you want to do with this program that we will call the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). However, I have a few guidelines for you to follow.

These women must have cross-country flying experience and be able to control a plane without help. If they cannot complete their jobs you have to ask them to leave immediately. Also, they must do what is asked of them for safety precautions. You will have a contract for them to sign outlining all the dangers so that we will not be sued or have to pay extra money if one of the women gets hurt or killed. I agree that they should help ferry. They will transport equipment, food, and personnel. If this does not run smoothly however, the operation will have to be shut down. Thank you for coming to me. I wish you good luck.

Sincerely,
Colonel William Tunner

Dear General Hap Arnold,
I am writing to you to make a proposal for women to have a part in the war. Before I will tell you about my proposal, I want you to know that women are capable of having the same skills as your men. We will prove to you, General, that women have the same endurance, stamina and intelligence as every single one of your soldiers. We, as women, do not want to watch these men die for our country and not have a chance to do anything about it. Sir, I am determined to be apart of the war and so are many women, as well.

We encourage you to consider my proposal. My proposal contains multiple different aspects and ideas. This squadron would be made up of capable women for the job. These women will ferry equipment to military bases and will do so with careful handling. The squadron will be participating in domestic military aviation. You, as a military leader, would understand that more people on the battlefield is better. With this squadron, they would be fighting in the war while at the same time taking over jobs for men so that they can go overseas. Also, these woman would obviously be trained first. My proposal is supported in multiple different ways, therefore you should allow me to continue on with my idea.

Sincerely,
Jackie Cochran

Dear Jackie Cochran,
We have received your proposal for the new squadron. However, we cannot have women, our primary caregivers to our children, fighting in the war. This is too dangerous for women. You may be capable of these skills, but America is not ready for women to be put at risk. Although some of your plan in the proposal was impossible to pursue, your idea of ferrying was an excellent idea.

One of your fellow female pilots, Nancy Harkness Love, has sent in a proposal, as well. Her proposal was a bit more modest and only involved the idea of ferrying machinery and equipment to different military bases. We have approved Mrs. Love’s proposal and we want to recruit you as the trainer for the Women’s Auxilary Ferrying Squadron (W.A.F.S). You will train women to become a W.A.F. We will provide you with a place to train them, but you must find recruits that you think are eligible to serve as a W.A.F.

If you accept this job, you and the W.A.F.S will still work hard everyday. You have said that these women have the same stamina, endurance and intelligence as my soldiers fighting in the war. I want you to prove to America that women are as equal and as capable as men.

Sincerely,
General Hap Arnold

Genre #2 -- WASP Contract

WASP Contract Agreement
A WASP’s Job:
We, the WASP director, Jacqueline Cochran and executive director, Nancy Love are glad that you are able to join us today to participate in the WASP training program. It may seem like fun and games, but it is not, you will take this seriously. You must be prepared for difficult situations. We want you to remember that sometimes even the best flyers cannot make it through our difficult and rigorous training program. However, you all have been chosen because we know that you are all capable to push through the hard times. Your job will require many different tasks and skills that will put you to the test and help you graduate as a WASP. When you join the WASP squadron, your job will be to ferry equipment on planes to other military bases. You will also help the men at war train by lugging targets and gliders on your planes for them to aim at. Other jobs you may do include testing planes, becoming flight instructors, going on tracking/searchlight missions, drone pilots, flying radio-controlled planes and multiple other tasks your commander will order you to do. These jobs will require courage and grit. We wish you luck on your journey to become a WASP.

By signing this contract you are agreeing to help your country do many jobs, whether their dangerous or not. You are agreeing to risk your life for your country by signing this contract, but you will be making a difference in the war effort.

Requirements to become a WASP:
You are required to have certain skills, have a certain attitude and know how to strategically fly a plane. These components are required before you start to train. You must be 5.2’ or taller to be a WASP. You must have flown at LEAST 500 hours and have had recent cross-country flying experience. You must have a commercial/flying license. Finally, you have to be intelligent and have to have graduated high school, passed the written exam and passed the army physical. These are the requirements to get into to training for a WASP.
Reminder:This does not mean you are going to become a WASP, you must pass the training program before you gain your wings.

To graduate from your training, you must complete the following. You must be able to ferry equipment to different destinations safely and carefully enough to keep the equipment to the best quality it can be. You must also be qualified to lug targets and gliders safely, but efficiently. Finally, you must always be ready to risk your lives for America. These will be the requirements for you to graduate your training.

Finally, you must pay the cost of the WASP fees
$1.65 for room and board
$30 for initial equipment/clothing
You will earn a $150 compensation per month

By signing this contract you are agreeing to follow everything your instructor says. You are also giving consent that you will try your hardest to meet these standards and requirements.

Schedule:
You will have a tight schedule filled with learning and flying. At the crack of dawn you will wake up and head to the airfield. Once you are here you will work hard to improve your flying skills and become a WASP. You must use the techniques you are taught by your flight instructor. You will work on stalls. This is the angle in which you will fly at. Spins and turns will also be improved. This is how you use your angle to turn and how to make sure you are smoothly flying in your spins. Take-offs is the other major thing you will be working on. Remember, no matter what, you will obey everything your flight instructor tells you to do or change. Everything is as safe as we can make it, however our safety regulations have limits. In the end it is you who makes sure you do not crash, burn, or become injured. As the pilot, it is your responsibility to check the plane and make sure everything is set and ready before flying.

After spending 12 hours at the airfield you will head to ground school. Here you will learn about navigation and meteorology. This means you will learn where to travel by using stars to help you navigate where you are going. Some of your flight training will also take place here. You’ll learn about the dynamics of flying. Physics and aerodynamics are another important part of ground school. Math and electronics are taught to benefit you in your knowledge of the plane as well as airplane mechanics. You will learn how to make sure the plane is safe to fly and how to check major systems the plane is running on. Morse code and communication will also be taught to make sure you can contact someone if there is an emergency.

After you graduate you will have completed a minimum 210 hours of flight training and 560 hours of ground school. All of these things you learn will teach you valuable lessons about flying that will be needed throughout your WASP career.

As you sign this contract you are agreeing to follow this schedule and the schedule you are given later on in your training as closely as possible. You will also try your hardest during your training so that you will be able to get your wings.

Risks/dangers:
If you are to join the WASPs, you must agree to face the many risks that come with the job and may not complain or speak out. If you do you will immediately be taken out of the job and replaced. All our rules are for safety and for efficiency of the program. There are cautions for all the jobs you will do. Ferrying out equipment to military bases result in chances of being shot down by enemy war planes or having your plane break down. While towing targets and gliders for practice, these men will be using live ammunition. Once again there will be a chance for you to be shot or burned, as it may be fatal. Finally, while test driving new planes there is a likelihood of engine failure or a malfunction in the plane.

If any of these risks were to occur and the incident would become fatal to you or one of your fellow WASPs, we will remind you that you are not apart of the military and will receive no military ranking or any military benefits. We shall not give you any death benefits and you will not be able to put an American flag over your casket.

If you sign this contract, you will hereby agree to all of these risks and conditions stated and will not speak out against these risks or refuse any order that may involve these risks. Your safety is important and as you sign this contract keep in mind that you will be risking your life. However, this is a great opportunity to continue flying and a way to contribute to the war effort in America.

By joining the WASP air force I accept all terms and conditions stated. I swear to honor America and our flag. I, ________________________________________________ will stand side by side with my fellow sisters and we will loyally honor our nation as WASPs.

________________________________________________________________

*Video of plane taking off*
You are one of few chosen to join us in becoming a Women Airforce Service Pilot. Not only will you help America, you will be changing rights for yourself as a woman. As you continue through this part of your life you will be learning many new types of information, so stay at attention. If at any time an instructor asks you to leave or gives you a command, you will obey.

*Take off/starting*
Before even getting into your plan, you must check multiple different pieces of equipment and take multiple different tests. You must check the pilot covers and check for any hydraulic leaks. Another big thing you must check is the tires. Look for any blisters, cuts, inflations or slipping in the tires. After that also check the down locks, ballast, nose gear and test the flap operations and control surfaces.
After you are finished checking these items and equipment off, you may enter the plane. In the plane you must have an emergency bombay air bottle, hydraulic reservoir and an accumulator. You also must have a tank full of gas. Make sure all the generator switches are switched to the right control. Also, you may adjust the cabin heat control. Turn the prop two or three times with your hand. That is about all you need to know for the first time entering a plane.
Then, you may start the engine. First, you must set the parking brakes. Then, open the throttle by 1/4 . After that adjust the wing flaps and cowl flaps to the upward position. Now set the landing gear control down and make sure the safety latch is on. After that the super chargers should be set on low. Oil cooler shutters are set upward along with the carburetor air on cold. The hydraulic pressure should be set at a minimum of 500 lbs and the mixture control should be at idle or cut off. Propeller controls should be on a high R.P.M and the propeller switches should have safety on and be feathering normally. After that, the battery switches should be on unless the cart is being used. The master switch should be on as well and the auxiliary power plant is connected. The main inverter switch, magneto switches, booster pumps and primers should be on. To start the starter energizing switch you must press the engaging switch and once the starter switch energizing switch is on, leave it on for ½ to 1 minute. Finally, the mixture controls should be auto rich and the throttle should be set to 800- 1000 R.P.M.
Once you have started the engine, may start the checklist for ground and warm up. First, shut off the primers, booster pumps auxiliary power plant. Next, close the cowl flaps and then reopen them. After that, take a visual check of the cowl flaps. Finally, the radio may be turned on, the gyros must be set, the altimeter must be set and you must close the bomb bay doors.
Next, after the warm-up procedure, you must go through the checklists for the engine and prop before takeoff. First, you must set the engine speed to 2000 R.P.M. After that, you must set the selector switch to manual, check each magneto separately, check the propeller, reduce engine speed to 200 R.P.M. and position the selector switch by increasing to 2000 R.P.M. Then, check feathering switch by decreasing R.P.M. and returning to normal speed. After that, set the selector switch into automatic position. When the selector switch is in that position, decrease the engine speed to 200 R.P.M with quadrant control, increase to 2000 R.P.M, run both engines up to 1800 and then check amps and volts. Make sure the generator switch is on. Finally, make sure the oil temps are at 60-80 degrees, the oil press is 71-85 lbs., and the fuel pressure is 15-17 lbs.
Finally, you must prepare for takeoff. The cowl flaps should be in an upward position and the wing flaps should be positioned downward ¼ to ½. Before taking off, you must remove the landing gear. To do so you control lack and cock safety. After that, make sure the supercharger is set on low. Next, the oil cooler shutters should be up, but not during cold weather. Carburetor air should be positioned upward and the hydraulic pressure should be set to 750-950 lbs. Also, the booster pumps should be on and the emergency control should be in an upward position. Also, the mixture controls should be set to auto rich and the propeller controls should have a high R.P.M. Your propeller switches should be on automatic, then safety, then normal. Your batteries, main inverter, and generator main line switches should be on. Make sure the fuel supply is adequate and your hatches are closed and satisfied. Your crew needs to be in position before you takeoff. Now, you are prepared and ready for takeoff, but always remember to stay at alert even when everything has been smooth during your takeoff.

*What to do in the air*
Once you take off, you must continue to accelerate higher until you reach your desired altitude. This is called climbing. When you climb your flaps should be angled at twenty degrees and you should be flying at low pitch. Since you are just starting your flight, you must have a full gas tank. After climbing you need to continue cruising in the air. This should be very smooth and there are many tasks you must complete to get to this stage. You must crank the flaps up and make sure the propellers are set to HIGH PITCH. The cowl flaps and wing flaps should be on neutral. The mixture control should be able to be used at your desire while you are cruising. Your propellers should be spinning at 1850 R. P. M. Also, the oil shutter should be open, but on neutral and the carburetor air cold must be neutral. Finally, the booster pump can be turned off at 1000 feet in the air. These are all the techniques you need to know before you get ready for landing. Now, we will be taking you through the procedure of landing once you get to your designated destination.

*checklist for landing*
Before you go into traffic areas for landing you will have to follow this procedure. Your trailing antenna and whip has to be pushed in. Your superchargers have to be low and the mixture control has to be in the auto rich position. Your booster pumps are required to be on and your landing gear handle needs to be pulled up. It is vital to make sure your fuel supply is adequate. Once this is all done you need to prepare for landing. Make sure your propeller controls are set at 2,300 R.P.M. (Revolutions Per Minute) and your landing gear is down and locked. Set your gas to reserve and set your cowl flaps at 20 degrees. Your hydraulic pressure should be holding 750-950 pounds per square inch. Now you are ready to land. After your landing roll is completed you will follow this list. Have your booster pumps off and your brakes on park. Set your propeller controls to a high R.P.M. and your mixture controls to auto lean. Your cowl flaps, wing flaps, 001 shutter, and carburetor air should all be up. Your final check before exiting the plane is the engine stopping. Stay at a 500 - 1000 R.P.M. idle for 2 minutes. Move your mixture control to idle and then cut it off. Open your throttles after the engines stop firing. After your chocks have been placed, turn your ignition, generator, and battery switches off. Now you have officially completed a full flying cycle. You must repeat these steps the next time you fly a plane.

*Video of Plane Landing*
You have now survived your first training lesson. If it moved too fast or you did not understand anything we advise you to leave the training area immediately. You will also have to participate in ground school for tests and other work that isn't done in an airplane. You have completed your first lesson and we wish you luck on the many hours of hard work to come.

*Video of Nancy Love and Jackie Cochran (A.K.A us)*
Although you work for the military you are not considered of military status. Your job will not entitle you to any military benefits. You will not indulge in ANY combat unless told differently. You will need to have all equipment before you begin flying. You will complete all the procedures shown before taking off. Before you are allowed to fly a military plane, you will have to get permission from an officer. You will not fly alone until you finish the training program, no matter how experienced you are. While in the air you must always be on alert for enemy planes. Remember, once again, they are ruthless and have no regard for human lives. We cannot stress enough how important your safety is to us and your fellow instructors. However, we cannot promise you your safety in the air. We wish you luck on your journey through the sky.

Zoot Suit: This flying suit is for the trainees. It is mechanic overalls that come in men sizes. We advise rolling up your pants and sleeves so you don't have any wardrobe malfunctions. This is only needed for trainees on the airfield; during ground school you will wear the mandatory trainee outfit.

Trainee Uniform: This outfit is for trainees in ground school or on the base. It consists of general pants, a white shirt, a leather jacket, and a fifinella patch. Your patch needs to be put on the left arm of the jacket, below the shoulder and above the elbow. This is mandatory for all trainees.

Dress Uniform:
This is for all WASP during dinner parties and other occasions while not on base unless a dress code is otherwise specified. The outfit includes a skirt, fitted belted jacket, white shirt, black tie and beret in Santiago blue. Accessories include a small black leather purse, your WASP wings if you have earned them, and your patches. Your patches show where you rank and what you have done.

Flying duty uniform:
This outfit is issued for all non-trainees while flying in the plane, if you aren't a trainees or a ferrying pilot. You'll need an Eisenhower jacket of the same material as the dress uniform, khaki slacks, a blue shirt and a tie the same color. You'll wear the same accessories as the dress uniform, except for the beret.

Leather flying suits:
This is what is typically worn by trainees and ferrying pilots. It is a heavy leather suit that also comes in only men sizes. You will need to roll the pant legs and sleeves. You are allowed to add any patches or wings you have as well.

Accessories:
There were extra accessories and details on the WASP uniform. The jacket and skirt are to be worn at all chances because they showed pride for being a WASP. White skirts are worn on dress occasions/formal inspections, these need to be worn underneath your blue WASP dress uniform. The tie must be a double knotted tie. Also, the headgear or beret must be worn at all times unless in a building and the WASPs have very specific requirements on how it should be worn. The beret should be pinned one-two inches off of your head and is clean and pressed like the rest of the uniform. The service shoes are worn at all times as well. Utility clothes will not be worn on dress occasions and the dress clothes should only be worn during dress occasions. Your WASP insignia will be worn with regulations. Also, functional flying clothes should be worn when on operational duty. Finally, NO civilian clothing will be worn.
