Originating in the 1400s, the culture became what it is due to the Hoklo (Hokkien) settlers that came to the Malay Peninsula and Indonesian Archipelago. Following their arrival, the settlers eventually mingled and married locals which ultimately led to a new fusion culture known as the Peranakan and Baba Nyonya.

After all, fully black or white attire is commonly associated with a sorrowful occasion such as a funeral. In addition, if there are family members who are still in the phase of mourning over the passing of their family member, they will not be allowed to join the Baba Nyonya marriage ceremony. The reason for the taboo is that they deem it very inauspicious to the couple who are getting married and are only supposed to be exposed to blessings.

With their skills to build a small boat called “sampan”, it is no surprise that they were among the famous sailors of the sea before the arrival of colonists in Sabah. Back then, their main activities were such as piracy and fishing, including horse riding which earned them the title of “East Cowboy” or “Sabah Cowboy”. Geographically, west coast Bajau mostly stays within Kota Kinabalu until Kota Belud, whereas east coast Bajau still practices the traditional lifestyle of fishing, hence they are also referred to as Bajau Laut. However, most east coast Bajau people have settled on land or in coastal villages.

Wasting food and resources is pretty much a big taboo that is frowned upon as they are considered blessings from the above. Therefore, the taboo is indirectly a reminder to be more attentive and appreciative towards food.

Interestingly enough, the name “Bidayuh” itself presents the meaning “inhabitants of the land”. In addition, the communal name “Land Dayak” which originated from the western part of Borneo was first used during the era of Rajah James Brooke while ruling as the White Rajah of Sarawak. That aside, the Bidayuh people are part of the main indigenous groups in Sarawak, located in towns and villages around Kuching and Samarahan. Geddes (1954) stated that Bidayuh means “people of the interior”. That said, it makes sense how the community also stands out for its longhouses and unique culture.

Moreover, the birth of a baby depends on the “opening” of the mother’s cervix; hence, tying something close can be seen as if “shutting” the pathway for the baby to be out.

Additionally, "Mamasok" which refers to "originals" or "indigenous people" also became one of their identities. According to their long-time tradition, the Kadazandusun people work as rice farmers and also have a yearly 1 month-long celebration of Harvest Festival (Pesta Kaamatan) during May. It is done so for them to receive a good harvest as the festival honors Huminodun, the sacrificed daughter of God (Kinoingan).

Also called the Dayak, Dyak, and Sea Dayak, they are known to reside along the mid-level hills and delta plains of Borneo. However, the reason they earned the title “Sea Dayak” was due to activities done by the Iban pirates in the 19th century. In the past, they came from a fearsome warrior race famous for headhunting and piracy and were regarded as an aggressive group. Nevertheless, after the first encounter with the British, they responded by moving inland. Only after Malaysia became independent did the Ibans expand throughout Sarawak.

The taboo might have originated from the belief in what you do today will be back to you, good or bad, similarly known as karma. Perhaps they believe if they harm the animals, their baby will be the one to receive the payback.

Therefore, to avoid the possibility of the child picking up on his or her parent’s behaviour, the mother must set a good example and avoid being a bad influence.

Additionally, friends are not allowed to visit the baby before the naming ceremony happens. It is because a Kadazandusun baby will be named twice in which the first name works as a temporary name, while the other one will be the real name. The reason behind the temporary name is due to their belief that “Rogon Gaiyah” will give name to the baby which allows it to claim the baby if the parents fail to give the baby a temporary name as soon as possible.
