They slept first for four hours, then woke for one or two hours before falling into a second four-hour sleep.
Later, in 2001, historian Roger Ekirch revealed a wealth of historical evidence that humans used to sleep in two distinct chunks.
During the waking period between sleeps people went to the toilet, smoked tobacco, stayed in bed, read, wrote, and often prayed.
Ekirch believes many sleeping problems may have roots in the human body's natural preference for segmented sleep.
At the end of the 19th century, psychologist Dr. Gregg Jacobs said 'Waking up during the night is part of normal human physiology'.
Jacobs suggests that the waking period between sleeps, could have played an important part in the human capacity to regulate stress naturally.
So the next time you wake up in the middle of the night, relax. Lying awake could be good for you
