Quote 1 (10): "He smiled. "Should we meet in the library? In, say, an hour?" "Very Well."" // This kind of reinforces gender norms, with the scene playing out as Francis asking Noemi out (it's a sort-of date)--following the norm of, "the man will ask the woman out." What's interesting, however, is how it could also be a slight challenge to these norms as Noemi is letting him ask her because she needs a favor from him, so she uses this to her advantage.

Quote 2 (11): "He picked up the oil lamp. "I'll walk you back to your room."" // This is simply a reinforcement of gender roles, specifically the aspect of "man protects woman." In this situation Virgil insists on guiding Noemi to her room because he, the man in this situation, feels that Noemi cannot make it back safely or without guidance from him, or she'd injure herself. So he takes it upon himself to take her back.

At night, and the ways he said it didint seem all decent. And yet though subtly wrong she found herself unable to reply."...."she didnt say a thing". (Garcia.121)

In chapter 11, Virgil had a certain interaction with Noemi. In which she was put into a very uncomfortable and expected situation. Though she doesnt say anything about what happened, it was never brought up again. As she states she "didnt want to start a fight". This reinforces the idea of women and to what extent a man can hold power over a one.

The reasoning that she didn’t say anything back was so they wouldn’t start fighting. This shows how much Virgil and the rest of the family have brought her down to a more “traditional woman”.

Noemi sat on the bed and contemplated the notion of enchantments that are never broken"
Page 115
This quote is Noemi reminiscing on her past and the fairy tales she's been told, where the woman is the one locked away and the man is the one who saves her. However, in this context, she seems to be associating Francis as the woman who is locked away in a tower, and herself as the handsome prince charming, coming to save him. This is because Noemi is telling Francis about the outside world, and he seems nervous but intrigued, but Florence has told Noemi to "Let Francis be. He's accepted his lot in this life. It's easier that way." So, the author is turning the old way of story telling on it's head.
