Southern Colonies by

For this lesson's blog post you will be writing about what it would be like to live in a Southern Colony. Imagine you are a colonist living in one of the Southern Colonies. What was your life like? What did you believe? What did you do to make a living? Give me a detailed description of what life in the Southern Colonies was like.

Remember, your entry should be in paragraph form, including complete sentences and correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

Think about...
Why did you come to live in the Southern region? What were you looking for or hoping for?
What was the environment like? Think about the geography and climate of the Southern region.
What types of jobs might you have living in one of the Southern Colonies?
Living in a Southern Colony, what type of religion might you be apart of and what are our religious beliefs?
What was the government like in the Southern Colonies? Was it different or similar in each colony? Could you vote or be apart of making laws?

What would it be like to live in a southern colony? Well I lived in Georgia back in the day, which I was there because I had to work to pay off my dept. I was struggling all my life to pay off my depts and it was hard. But when it came time I had to leave my family and make the choice of going to jail for the rest on my life or coming to Georgia to pay them off. I was a Cathlic, and I was strong in my faith so thoughend it out and I went to Georgia beacuse I knew I had to see my family again.
Thanks to Georiga I knew my family was back home safe becauase Georgia was the last southern colony in the line and spanish Flordia was right below us so the built a wall and nothing could pass through it, not even the spanish. So I was hoping as long as nothing came bursting though that wall I knew that my family and I were safe in the Sourthern Colonys.

I just moved to Virginia, I came for more land and religious freedom. Back where I came from, we didn't have much of any freedom and we were persecuted for it. We worked hard and got less so I moved to Virginia for a better chance at a better life. I would work hard and received great payment for my home grown crops.. It's very hot here in Virginia but I think I could handle it. I believe in the Catholic religion and soon come to find that the Southern colonies respected my religion and many others also believed in the same religion. The government is great, you have more people to tell you if your guilty or innocent, which is trial by the jury. It's not just one person to tell you that your guilty, you get a chance to explain yourself and maybe and second chance to make a correct life.

Walking outside and inhaling is refreshing and yet scary at times. It gives you a sense of wholeness or your freedom, while the deepened thought of having someone come from behind and attack you keeps you on your feet. In Georgia at the bottom of all the colonies, we had a lot more to protect. We were like a giant shield against whatever the others didn't want to face. And so whenever I got the chance to sit and breathe I did. At first I lived in Maryland and traveled by a ship of hundreds of other Catholics, like me, to start a new life. As time went on and the government became too over ruling I travled to each colony. Georgia was filled with wonderful farm land. It was just a little, hot, all the time, and humid, also all the time. But it was better than nothing. There were thousands of people in Georgia, with the debters all paying their debt by working we had stocks of food to choose from, I myself farm, even though I am NOT a debter, I farm because in England not only was I Catholic, but it moved me down the social pyramid making me very poor. The flat and wet lands in Georgia made it easier to farm certain types of crops and also made it a lot harder and hotter than any place in England.
I have only been in Georgia for one month and I have yet to come across a reason to hate it, it has an okay government, great farm lands, and it's okay to be the first line of defense, it keeps you awake and ready. But most of all Georgia gives me more opportunities, no one will find me in some over-rated colony that everyone makes a big deal about, making everyone move there, just to find out that their "hype" was for nothing at all. To be quite frank Georgia is under-rated, and should get more credit, after all we are the first line of defense and we have the best farm lands. But it doesn't matter anyways, all other people will see is a colony full of debters, which made us different, and unique, or special. Either way my colony is great, and has its ups and downs. But at least somedays, I get to stop and take a breath.

We have religious freedom but that doesn't take care of the mosquitoes. There is hot muggy summers and the mosquitoes carry around and spread deadly diseases.
There are many kinds of jobs in the Southern Colonies. Where I live, there is a perfect stop for trading crops and goods.

I came to Virginia as everyone else did, freedom and religious beliefs. I was known as a Quaker, should've gone to Pennsylvania, I know. But I am a pacifist and I am very tolerant of others beliefs, even when they may not do the same for mine. And life here was rough, as you'd expect, however, I made a living through growing and selling crops.
I was looking for peace, atleast expecting some reassurance that this new world would be better. It was, until summer came. Blasted mosquitoes carried diseases and nearly wiped out all my crops that year. The hot and humid weather was something I madly dreaded, the government was...Fair, for the most part at least. Many things were different here compared to the other colonies, I'd rather be somewhere less cold, however, the soil here is perfect for my crops. Sadly, I can't vote and even be included in law makings. But hey, that's what living in the Southern Colonies is like.

As my foot touched the surface of the free worshipping land of Maryland, I looked out across the landscape of my new home. All of the people that I saw seemed peaceful, at ease with everyone around them. Everyone here came for freedom of religion, including me. I thank Lord Baltimore for establishing this colony in my mind before walking off the boat and further into the place that I will now call home.
A cool breeze caught my hair, bringing into the air. I closed my eyes to enjoy the few moments of the crisp air as it gently caressed my pinkened cheeks.
I hope to see lord Baltimore, maybe then I can thank him in person for inviting me here. Now, though, I have walk to the place that I am to work, the blacksmith. All I have to do is show them what I got, and I will be hired. I personally think I am a pretty good blacksmith, but I know that there are people better than me. I don't even know if I will get the job!
About a day or so later, I am already working. Everyone here has been so nice to me. I was definitely not going to get used to that anytime soon.
After a long day at work, all I want to do is go home, pray that tomorrow will be as good as today, and eat. However, I have yet to buy my house.
Gently, I sit down against a tree to think about what kind of life I will have here. Maybe a rough one, since I don't get paid enough for the occupation I have. Maybe it will be better than New York. No, it will definitely be better. No persecution for catholics. Freedom. The whole reason I came here.
I shake those thoughts from my head before looking up at the night sky. Nice and clear, I can see the stars, the small specks on the huge blanket-like dome that covered the earth at night.
I could tell that this was going to be a good life. I can't wait to thank Lord Baltimore.

We have made it to Georgia an its really hot here but that means we can farm good since their is rich soil and that will help us get money. I might have to go help the men with picking crops. I really like our government their not as harsh as Kings James was. I could help make the laws and I think I did a good job beacuse everybody seems to like our laws.

My name is Johnson Nelms, I live in Georgia, but I am not originally from here.I use to live in England, under the rule of King James. There I did not have religious freedom, followed the teachings Christianity.I have a wife and two children. We owned a small farm and for the first couple of years it went well but then the soil became very dry and we were not able to grow crops anymore on that land.My family soon fell into corruption and was deep in debt.I was sentenced to prison but found out that I could go to Georgia to work and pay off my debt.In Georgia I hope that I can pay off the debt, the work will be hard but it is better than being in prison.
When I arrived in Georgia, the envirement was humid and hot. There was many animals such as birds chirping, frogs croaking, and deer running in the woods. There was even some swamps and it was mostly flat land. Some jobs that were available to me was farming, clearing forests, and helping build houses. When I got to Georgia I was surprised to find out that most people there were tolerant of other religions, even some people followed christianity to.Another thing I was very surprised about was that the people there contributed or helped make decisions in government. One similarity between England and Georgia is that they both had their own constitution. One difference between them is that in England you did not have religious freedom, you could be punished by whippings, put in jail or even persecuted, but in Georgia we had religious freedom and would not be harshly punished for your religion.Hopefully, someday I will have earned enough money to pay off the debt, go back and get my family and permanently live in Georgia.

They'd rather sit back and relax in Virginia or one of the older colonies. Yeah, there are a lot of mosquitos, but that's just part of life. I mostly do chores on the farm because I have a big family. We all pitch in to get the job done. We work even harder when the harvest comes around.

The summers are usually long and humid ,as well as hot, but there are a lot of rains due to there being a lot of water around. We all go to church on Sundays. If we ever get spare time, I usually got out and gather flowers for the table, pick berries, sew outfits for my siblings, read books, and chop trees for firewood or projects. The kind of projects I'm talking about is making wooden doll houses, dolls, tables, chairs, and small boards for children to paint on. I sell them in a little shop that I built near town square. I make most of my money of of these along with baked goods that I sell there ,too.

My entire family is Catholic. So every single member of the family has a Holy Bible. We are tolerant of other religions so as long as they don't try to kill us. The government is okay. At least it isn't like England. So unfair

In Virginia slaves are legal so my Uncle John has over 200 of em. One of em spit on me one time so uncle brought the whip down on him. His back was as red as fire . None of em ever spit on me again. I'm glad I have Uncle John to help me I was hoping he would be like pa.
Now that I am sixteen I can now supervise in the field with Uncle John. I see the slaves are growing cotton and tobacco. Life is easy for me because Uncle is nice and he never gets mad. We always go to the Anglican church, Uncle says it's a sin not to. Sometimes Uncle has to leave to go handle things. I asked the next time he left and he said he's going to vote for the laws. I looked out the top window of the big house and I see how flat the land is with very few hills. Then I see a small mosquito land on the window. Then My Uncle called me down and told me to get into the wagon we are going to Maryland and so we rode to Maryland. When we got there I noticed it wasn't all that different different everyone was nice to us and I noticed the slaves. From what I have seen all of the southern colonies have slaves. I notice how it is hot and humid like Virginia .Then we went back to Virginia and carried on with the plantation.

The land is much more fertile from what they described to me in back at the other land. We grow so much, and at night we use that money to dine like the kings. Fields here are so indescribably big. Lined with so many seeds given to us by our neighbors, the Natives. We have lettuce, tomatoes, and potatoes galore! It brings a smile to our children's faces. Yet, no food is wasted here. Our tummies full of the night before. Our lungs filled with the air of freedom. And our hands lined with touch of family.
I think that god wanted us here, that's why we're so happy. When I came here, I wanted a fresh start. My Catholic beliefs have led my family and me here. When I feel sweat roll down, I know I have put enough effort into today, but yet I need more to feel satisfaction. To satisfy it, all I need is the love of my family.

When I was little, I always dreamed of going to America. Now I am going, but the not the way imagined.I owed $100 to Mark, so instead of going to debtor's prison, I got to go to Georgia, where I would work my tail off for 2 years. During the sailing, a storm hit us. We lost most of the supplies, and even two of the crewman! As life was looking bleak, we reached land, God-blessed land.

As we got out of the boat, I kind of lost a bit of enthusiasm when I saw the land. It was mostly farming land, with quite a few white-folk working like slaves. I right then and there prayed to the Lord that I would not die, I was so scared. The captain gestured toward the field. "Well, better get your debt payed, am I right boys?" I swore silently, wishing home was a bit closer.

2 years later, I had payed off my debt. But, instead of coming home, I invited my wife and children to come. Ah, freedom once again! And I could vote too, which is so amazing, whereas in England, the king would be the decider of everything! And once I got used to it, the hills and valleys now seem like a paradise.

When my wife, Shannon, and my child got there, I was overjoyed, showing them everything I loved about the colony. What got me thinking though, was when Shannon asked me, "So, have you been to any other colonies?""No, but now that I think about it, that's a good idea!" And so we went on to visit Maryland. When we got there, we were immediately plagued with people advertising their religion and asking what ours was. I yelled angrily that we were Catholic, so get over it.

We visited all of the towns, markets, and harbors.Eventually, we got tired of moving around, and settled in a nice, remote area. As we lay down to go to sleep, I reflected how everything was so different in the two colonies, than faded into a deep, dark, void.

My family has already gotten all of their stuff out of our home in England. I am very sad to go because I have lived in our home with my family for 15 years and I've made great memories in our home. The reason we are moving is because my family is made up of Christ. Ever since King James started the Anglican Church my family and I have had to worship in our own home. We were moving with many other people to a place called Virginia. It was a cold morning as I and many other people and their children boarded the ship we turned to look back at the foggy and desolate boat port. As we are sailing the water crashed hard on the boat rocking it back and forth like a rocking chair. Many people got seasick but soon after we arrived. The atmosphere was very cold. It reminded me of England but not as much forest. Life there at Virginia was very hard because having to build houses and farm. My father worked in the farm and worked 15 hours a day. Our Government was made up of people who did not know how to run a government. Our government was run differently from the other governments because the other governments were based off their religion. I worked in the farm with my father. We did have freedoms to be able to vote and decide our own laws. Our life in the colony so far has been great!

"So what brings you here" He said voice low and ruff. I think for a moment before replying." I was in deut." My reply was simple but some nodded in understanding.
As the others talked I thought about my life here so far. I have lived a peaceful life and have yet to sunned or persecuted for my catholic beliefs. I also have a good job framing the downside is its always so humid. I also heard they the spanish have a colony just south of us with can get unsettling from time to time but life here is better than being throw in jail so I'll take it. My thoughts were interrupted by someone calling my name. As i joined the conversation

My name is Catherine. I live in Georgia. I have been here for only ten years. I have a husband and two children. I came here so I can pay off my debts. I didn't want to go to jail so I decided to move to Georgia. I was hoping to start a family of my own like my mother did. She died when I was 15 years old. It was a terrible tragedy. The environment is beautiful. There are flowers and a few trees around. The temperature is warm, but in the summer, it's super hot. Thank goodness I don't work in the fields. My job is to hunt and make sure the colony is fed. I was busy washing the dishes when the bell rang. That when I knew it was time for church. I'm a Catholic. I believe that we can speak to God without a minister. I quickly grabbed my bible and walked down to the church. My husband, Justin, was behind with our son and daughter, Jake and Emily. After church, Justin goes to the court. He is a judge there. That how my family gets a lot of money. The government is great. We have laws and rights. I just love living in Georgia. The fresh air, the windy breeze makes me want to go to sleep. Then the afternoon bell rang. That's when I go hunting. There are a lot of animals in the woods. I just have to watch out for any poison ivy. One touch of that stuff could make me swell up. That's why I always bring my medicine with me. I just wish it that it wasn't always hot in summer. After the day was done, we headed to our homes and slept. I was glad that I went to Georgia.

I want to be able to pay of my debts like farming. I owed someone money because i had to buy some cool clothes because all i had was a long sleeve shirt and pants, because it is very hot and humid here. So now i have to farm. I usto live in the Northern colonies that's why i had long sleeves and pants. I'm looking forward to pay of my debts so i can focus on what i love most( which is hunting ),so i can make my own money so i won't have to work on a farm, because i don't like farming. I believed that farming crops is a good idea because other people the food to eat so it's good to farm. I made the living by doing my job for the other people. I am hoping that my life will be good cause I want all the people to have a good meal and great food. My environment was farming and being outside the whole day. I think it's nice for our government to help those who did wrong and can't fix them. This governmental way is called a Difference of Buffer. This is different from the other colonies but it's a good thing because more people will come here for this reason. I think James Oglethorpe is a good leader of this colony and the other Colonist think the same. It's pretty hot here but it is good enough to plant more crops. I'm a Farmer like most people ,but I do it for a living. I could vote but only White men that owns land can vote. I love it in Georgia. I am a Christian and a armer and I own a lot of land.

Living in the southern colonies contained hard work with all the rich soil mountained and leaping up upon plantation to plantation and the everyday heat consuming and draining the energy out of us because of the long ,hot, and humid weather made life have a hard meaning to it. Sure jobs were heaving on our shoulders, but I was pleased to know that even though the minutes felt like hours of the frustrating labor, that I had religious freedom. My Dad, Mom, my siblings, and I have come to America for a better start and religious purposes, but later came to find out that America wasn't everything we had hoped it was, until we moved into the southern colonies. We are catholics, and when we first moved here we realized that not all colonies excepted our beliefs until we heard about the great southern colonies. My Dad found a nice home on a little plantation that we continue to live on today, we have a couple of slaves that help me and Ma clean and cook and one that helps my Dad in the field.
Last summer, my Dad built a huge house for all the slaves to live in. We also have abundant natural resources that help us get through the winter. We all had an important job on the plantation, My Dad helped with the slaves on the farm and so did my brother, my sisters and me help Ma clean, cook, pick flowers, help in the garden, and feed the horses apples.
We are in Maryland, a colony that has a welcome mat already set down for us, we moved has soon as we could because they gave us a chance at a happy life, unlike England who persecuted us for our religious beliefs. Yes, we didn't work on a farm in England, and we didn't have slaves, but I've grown to like a place of excepts my family and me for ourselves.

I have been a colonist in the lower parts since I sailed across the great Atlantic Ocean to Virginia. When I figured out that there was no gold in Virginia, I moved south to North Carolina and started farming tobacco. Man, how that tobacco grew and grew. Never stopped growing until winter rolled around and by that time we had sold most of it back to England. Oh man how snobby those people are. Never liked them anyway and was very happy to finally start a new life in the New World. I had been a part of the Anglican Church but never really agreed with all that nonsense. I went with some Puritans over the Atlantic and then I left them to go to South. Haven't I already said this. Man, my memory is going away like all them people going west. Guess the climate is getting to me. Never been so hot and muggy in my whole life. I ain't living on the coast no more due to this rugged terrain in North Carolina and I am sure glad I don't anymore because it is way muggier on the coast. Man, I got to get to that assembly meeting in the square. I didn't have to attend those in Virginia. We gotta vote on a new mayor and I hope he is a good one . Well folks, I hope you enjoy your life in the thirteen colonies.

I can't get over how much better it is than in New England where I had lots of debt and I was going to have to go to jail due to all I owed. But then I fled here and I get to work without all kinds of debt holding me down. The economy here was great we trade tobacco and other crops. My job in the south parts of the colonies is being a farmer. I work very hard and then go home to a good home. The geography here was beautiful crops as far as the eye can see. The climate is hot and humid. I am a Christian who can worship freely here.

Even though everything is very nice and good here I still have a huge responsibility, we are a buffer zone. Us being at the bottom of all the colonies and close to the spanish, we are basically the first line of defense, we have to be ready at all times for the spanish to attack. Are government is a democratic government we got to elect those who got to make the laws and rules we helped some with the government. I work as a guard for England and my job is to protect against the Spanish. I haven't lived here long, so I am still adjusting to the heat and living in a rural area like this. There is a lot of farmland and The people are mostly farmers and plantation owners.
You just about have to be a plantation owner to be able to have a say in the government here. Which is also different because if your rich you can vote in Georgia. I am not able to have the same life as the people in georgia because of my job but I prefer it this way. Hopefully one day I can become one of the governor's main soldiers and possibly make enough money to sustain the large family I hope to have. It is easier to talk with people here because a lot of them are also from england so they can work off their debts, because of this many of them are Anglican like me and disputes don't break out about religion.

Life on the plantation was hard. Those good-for-nothing slaves just won't pick the field. I came to South Carolina to become a successful farmer, not the laughing-stock of the farmer's market. They complain to me that it's too hot, when my overseers are doing perfectly fine. They get don't take a water break until every four hours has gone by. The slaves will be fine, meanwhile i've got my buyers breathing down my neck. "When will the crop be finished?", they say. As long as those slaves don 't pick up the dang pace, it might never get done.
Now that those lazy idiots have finally picked up the pace, I think we're looking at a good year. I can't tell you how relieved I am. I heard that some of those Georgia forts had to take shots at the spaniards a few days ago. One of my workers thought that would be a good time for him to run away. He didn't even get a mile away. Now that the dogs have had their share of him, I think he will be working a special section of the field with two less fingers. Oughta teach him to never flee from me, but stay and fight like a man.
My wife and children are doing pretty good. Junior finally got to feel how hard life in the field is. Of course the others helped him out, but he said he never wanted to work out there again. We went to church last Sunday, and I loved it. Getting out of the sun felt amazing. We learned more about our father and the lord. My wife and little girl looked as beautiful as ever. Junior looked like his old man, dashing and full of swagger. That was probably the best time I had ever had with the three of them.
The assembly was having another meeting today, about a large epidemic of run away slaves. I put my vote in (not that it really mattered, because I wasn't on the assembly board) and hoped that my voice would be heard. They had all apparently been running up North, to New York, New Jersey, and they say one was found all the way up in Massachusetts. Something about slavery not being legal in those states. I hope that none of mine "mysteriously go missing".
The Southern colony of South Carolina is amazing. We get our business done in the fields. The farm is our life.

My name is Buck Sherk and I live in Georgia but I used to live in England where it was torcher for me and my family. Me and my family are christians and we worship a lot with the ministers but then we decided to worship on our own in the house because we thought that they would not catch us.
When we were half way through the lesson these people walked in and they made us go to jail for not listening to a minister. Then we hard about the colony of Georgia and that a dude by the name of James Oglethorpe made it to where people with a dept to pay to get out of jail could now go there a work for the money that we owe.
When got there it was really hot and humid so that it was good for the rice and that meant that it will not be that long till we get out of jail and pay our dept. We started our first day and everybody was telling us about how rice was the best thing we could farm and get a lot of money.

The other reason we came here was because of the money we could of make off of the farming rice. The only bad thing was the weather because it was hot and humid. Also our religious beliefs were the same as the other people beliefs. The government was only the rich white people and they were also the only people that could vote.

On my plantation we grow rice and indigo, which is a dye.
The weather here is very hot and humid during the summer and the winters are cool. The land is flat and perfect for farming.
On my plantation I am very successful because my land is a farming hotspot. When I came to this colony I was hoping to be successful and I was right for I am a very rich man with a large amount of land.
Me and my family are part of the Catholic Church. Every sunday we wake up early get the slaves working and head to the town church.
My wife takes care our three children while I am working and making sure the slaves are doing there work.If the slaves weren't working i would get out my whip and lash them until I thought they had learned their lesson.
Not only do I own a successful plantation I also hold a high rank in the colonies government. The government that we have here in South Carolina is almost the exact same as Maryland.
I when I moved here to America I made it my life to farm and make money in the new world.

The first step of freedom was astonishing. Feeling the free wind of Virginia, made me genuinely happy. Although life in England with my husband was fair, I can already predict that life here in Virginia will be drastically better. My husband and I, are already well on our way to making a successful farm. Tobacco will be our main crop and we plan on raising cattle. We're hoping to gain wealth and profit from this decision, and later on start a family. The environment here is perfect for growing crops, just like tobacco. I'm still adjusting to the harsh climate, though. Its very hot and humid, but it's worth the profit we'll gain off of tobacco.
I'm also very thrilled to be able to worship my protestant religion freely. Being Catholic, was one of the hardest things to deal with in England, but now there's so much diversity, no one judges you for your religion.
In spite of my uneducated decision, to stay in England for so long, I'm very pleased to be here in Virginia and be able to be free.

So moving to Georgia is the best option for my family and I.
Living in the southern colonies is much different then living in England. We have religious freedom here. Let's begin, my life as a child was simple. I woke up, did my morning routine which consisted of bathing, brushing my teeth and hair. Helping papa with the garden. Going out to the pasture and feeding the cows. The humid weather didn't make it easy, I could see my my dad wiping the sweat off his forehead. I'm 29 as of right now and I work at a lumbering factory. My pay is $8.25 an hour. Just enough to support my wife and I. In England it was difficult to get by, that's why we moved to the states. This is what we were hoping for. The goverment there was not near as wonderful as the govermant here. We have religious freedom to, so i love America I was going to pick tobacco, but this was much better. This was my story.

Dear Diary,
I have unloaded all of my possessions, memories upon memories that I cherish. Was I sad to move? Of course I was. But it was necessary; very necessary.
As a look at the little girl that sits beside me, I see my sister in her. My sister had died in an outbreak of scarlet fever and had left her daughter, Amelia, to me on her dying breaths. This was one reason I had left England. My sister's memory haunted me as long as my feet touched the land where hers had. Virginia was like a breath of fresh air. Maybe somehow I could forget this tragedy.
Virginia is much more humid than I expected and the heat seemed to swamp me. I live in a small town where the people are very welcoming. Outside the town there are rows upon rows of farmland. The crops are mostly tobacco, which I firmly disagree with, with a bit of corn. Although, there are some areas where the earth is scarred, cut and worn out from the tons of miners that come for nothing other than gold. Sometime in the future they moved on and farmers came in to grow their crops.
This made Virginia the perfect place, full of farmers with houses so spread out they gave no care what religion their neighbors were, and people in the town too busy with their work to care either. My sister and I were undecided, even though we were raised by our strictly catholic parents. Something just didn't seem to click with us about. We knew something was out there, but who knew what it was? Amelia is like us too, free above all else.
This brings us to another reason why we came to the Americas: freedom. What was life without the freedom to make your own choices. We felt we would be judged in Maryland, even though they were officially religiously free, because the latter were Catholic.
The Carolinas would be a decent choice, but I didn't want Amelia to see the cruelty the slaves faced. She had a very kind heart, and I feel that would be torture to her. Amelia could take no more grief after the violent death of her mother.
Obviously I couldn't move to Georgia. Georgia could turn into a warzone against the Spanish, and I wouldn't ship Amelia off into the middle of that.
Since I have just arrived, I have yet to figure out the ways of this strange town and haven't gotten a job yet. Amelia was distraught to leave her friends but will just have to make new ones. May our new beginning in the Southern colonies be welcoming and prosperous.
Signed,
Olivia Williams

But when we moved to Virginia as indentured servants we had a roof over our heads, plenty of food and were soon able to move up in society. Don’t get me wrong life in Virginia was still hard. We had to work everyday from sunup to sundown but it was better than dying in England.
When we first got to Virginia we were indentured servants but after 3 years of hard work we have finally been able to pay off our passage and start saving money to buy a farm of our own.

Sometimes I still wake up and forget where I am. I look at the unfamiliar dirt floor of the small, dingy, one room cabin me and my family have built, and try desperately to find the smell of England smoke in the air, and hear the sound of the people purchasing items from the market. I see only trees, dirt, and plants for as far as my eyes can see. I did not want to come here. I would much rather be in England helping Mrs. Arabella make dresses, sewing the pieces together that she had cut for me. Instead I am here, where I am forced to teach school lessons to the younger children in mine and the surrounding families because we can’t afford to send them to school, and they would walk for more time than they would actually do school work as it was so far away.
We did not have a lot of money, that’s why I had worked from age 6 to age 16 at Mrs. Arabella’s Dress Tailoring. She did not pay well, but she was willing to allow a child to work for her. Sometimes she would send me home with scrap fabric or spare change whenever money was especially low, to make my siblings clothes that kept them warm in the winter months. Now, I make mine and the eight other families that moved here with us clothes and whatever else they need. Game bags, shoes, market bags, window curtains, and blankets. Since I taught and sewed, that left me no time to work on the farm, which is what my other four siblings did. The youngest being five, me being the oldest at seventeen. We moved here, to Georgia, for a fresh start. A chance to repay our debt that we owed, and we owed lots of it. We farm tobacco, which does bring in a good amount of income, but is quite costly to maintain. My father shares the land with the other men in the surrounding families, as none of our families could afford the land on our own. Eventually we hope to expand the farm onto more land once we are financially stable. Since we work with the other families, we don’t have to pay people or buy slaves to work the land. My father does not believe that slavery is morally correct, and he vowed that he would never treat someone so awful as the men that live about two days passage on horseback as long as he lived. Unlike many families in the area, our group followed the Quaker faith. We don’t believe in violence of any kind, especially unjust violence. The eight families we came with and us all collected as much money as we could afford to put in, and we bought our land from the Native Americans. We didn’t have quite enough, but occasionally we teach them how to use our technology which is much more advanced than theirs. Since Georgia had just become a settlement when we moved here, we don’t really have a set government yet. Everyone pretty much tends to their farm work and don’t have time to bother others. I look forward to the future of this colony and this farm, but I will return to England when I’m older. I will return to the place I had known my entire life. No matter what it takes.

Howdy! My name is Maribel and I live in Georgia! I live on a tobacco plantation. My Daddy is the master and my Momma instructs the house slaves. It's very hot up here in Georgia. Very humid too. That's why we grow tobacco, the climate is perfect. I don't really have to do any work, unlike the slaves. All I do is learn the alphabet and play with my fourteen brothers and sisters. Yee-haw! We moved here because my Daddy has a certain passion to destroy the Spanish. He hoped to be able to make a livin' here and help fight the Spanish off. You see, Georgia was made as a buffer colony so the Spanish wouldn't be able to take over the other colonies. I heard Momma and Daddy talking about the Spanish a few nights ago. Apparently, the Spanish are trying to invade Georgia! Sometimes I worry about the colony of Georgia getting taken over by the Spanish, it makes me real anxious. Other than that, I am very happy here. It's better than England. There my Daddy had to pay a lot of unnecessary taxes. We didn't have a lot of money then, but now that we moved to Georgia we are rich!
The people are very nice here, too. We don't have a lot of neighbors cause our plantation is so big, but when we go into town we get treated so good. Sometimes I wonder if it's just because we're white and rich. I suppose that's just the way it is here. All the government is made up of white, rich men too, I suppose. Unfortunately, those men won't allow us women to vote. None of the other women can vote in the other colonies either, so I guess that's fair. We don't really get a say in the laws, so complaining won't get me anywhere. Darn tootin'. They might not be accepting of women's rights, but they are accepting of other religions. I, myself, am a Puritan. I believe that the Anglican church should be cleansed! Don't get me started on that, now. Anyway, I have to go help my ninth little sister find her straw doll. Good-bye, now! Have a fine day! Yee-haw!

My name is Winifred and I am a slave. I was born a slave so this is all I've known. I work for Master John Montgomery on his plantation farm in Virginia. He says that I'm one of the more well behaved slaves and treats us well. As well as he can, while still owning us. I have some finer clothes compared to the rest of the slaves.
That doesn't mean I don't want to be free. It would be a miracle if I could be free but I don't think I'll ever get that chance. Master John said that if I can work and earn enough money then I could buy my way out of slavery but I don't think I'll have enough time. If I can't, though, I'll give it to another slave. At least they'll be able to get free from this wretched place.
At least 5 times a week I get whipped or beaten. Sometimes, if it's a bad day, I'll be starved for a day or two. That is when it's hardest because of the long, hot, humid summers. I have to harvest the tobacco in sweltering heat.
I pray to the Lord that I'll somehow get out of here or help other slaves get out of here. Either one would make me the happiest woman alive. I pray to God above that I see something other than green hills and tobacco fields.
I sometimes overhear the Master talking about the government. How he was proud that we weren't being completely controlled by the king, how everyone in the colony didn't have to give themselves completely to the tyrannical king. I thought that was ironic. They've become the very thing they sought to destroy. I do know that it's like that in all the south.
I overheard the Master talking about voting, too. I couldn't help but let a bitter smile make its way across my lips. I could never vote. Being a woman and a slave is the worst combination when it comes to government. If I ever get out of here, I'll go up north and become a seamstress. The Master says I'm a mighty fine seamstress. I'm the head seamstress. When it's time for other slaves to learn how to sew, they come to me. It earns me at least a tiny bit more respec

Hi my name is Mary Lockwood and I live on a plantation in Georgia. I believed that people should earn a second chance to repay their debt, and thats why im here today. To work off my debt so I could be free again. For my self to make money I help around on the plantation, anything just to get paid. Life here in the south was very hard. The climate is hot and humid with long summers. The reason I came to the southern region was for me to pay off my debt but also to start a new beginning. I was hoping for a fresh start for myself, maybe be able to find a husband and start a family. In the south some of the jobs you can do are indentured servant, farmer, tobacco grower and more. My religion that i believe in is catholic, we believe that Jesus Christ is the holy son of our lord and savior. The government here is run by a big group of white men. Each of the colonies are like that. To end this i just want to say that their is a way for a second chance in life.

I am living in the colony of North Carolina. I'm a slave that lives on bill's plantation. My parents never gave me a name so people call me bill jr. because I'm the plantation owner's son. Every slave that he has is always sorry for me because my parents don't want to care for me so they just threw me out when I was only 3 yrs old. It's really disappointing when you think about but they did it to save money. The slaves took care of me until I was able to fend for myself and go off and work alone in the fields.
My slave parents' names are steve and darla swiss. They are from africa and was "shipped" here by boat and can never leave until the basically die but i will take care of them better than how they took care of me when I was little.
Two years past since i was able to fend for myself. It has been very long and tiring do to all the other slaves staying home most of the days we were supposed to be working out on the field when the governor came by to grab some crops for a feast. I tried getting everyone else to get up and work but they were dying so I started working triple times faster so that they wouldn't get whipped. It was painful for me because I always had to get up seven hours earlier to get all the work done but when I didn't get everything I took the whipping for them and never gave up until my mother past away three months later by my father murdering her for food. It was brutal hearing the screams when I ran back as fast as I can but when the screams stopped I knew I was to late to save her. I didn't care if he was my father, I wanted to take revenge on my mother with what he did to her and silence it out so no one would try to stop me. The government wasn't really that strict so I could almost do anything but if i was caught by the plantation owner i would most likely be gone from the plantation and never be able to come back.
I wasn't really a religious person but everyone else was major christian and I was the only one who wasn't. I didn't really learn a lot but I was learning slowly from when the plantation owner talked to me or talked to others or when the others talked or tried to teach me.

Hi my name is WIlliam Benn and I am a quaker. My family and I all live in Virginia and live in a city called Jamestown. You may be wondering why don't I live with all the other quakers in pennsylvania and I am here to tell you why. Many years ago before I was a father and before I was married I worked in a flower store. I know that seems weird but florist seem to make lots of money in England. One day a tall man by the name of William Penn walks in. I walk over to him and ask what he would like and he asked for a flower that was very classy. I looked around until i I found the perfect one then handed him some lilies. He loved them and bought them for 10 dollars. As he was about to exit, the courier walked in and said,"Package for William Benn." I told him that I was over here and the man came over to me. But as soon as he was about to set the package down William penn grabbed the package and said,"I think you said my name." I seized the package back and me and him got into a small quarrel. In all the mess going on he knocked over my flowers into the fire and burnt the whole place down and I never spoke to him again. Well now that we have that out of the way we can get to the more interesting stuff. Many people wonder why I would leave England and I always reply with two reasons. One of the reasons being that the English men didn't like how I worshiped so I came over here to get away from all the negativity. The second reason has to do with all the fertile ground, here in Virginia the ground is some of the best which means I can grow more flowers and start up my business again.
Here in Virgina the main thing I was hoping for is lots of people that way I can start to grow my business locally and make lots of money. Although the ground is great the bugs aren't. There are mosquitoes everywhere as soon as the sun starts to go down but at least there is lots of timber for making settlements and shelter. A lot of the geography here is mainly hilly but there is some plains. In the summer it gets pretty hot and humid but at least the winters aren't very bad, they are pretty mild and don't last that long. Every now and then the general assembly gets called which is when the "burgesses" come and change laws or make new ones. Sometimes I wish that we could vote and everyone could pick what they wanted but that doesn't happen here. The other day a shipment of slaves came in and everything is getting done a lot quicker now that we don't have to do all the work. My flower farm is now starting to grow and I think I could make a great business out of what is here in the The New World.

Its never been like that in England!

I worked on a tobacco farm with some other people that needed to pay a debt to England. The days were so hot I needed to sit in the shade for 30 minutes if I wanted to work for 5. As I worked I realized the harsh treatment of the slaves there so every night I would sneek them some leftover bread the Master gave to me. Im on my back to England now for as I have paid my debt. Im almost at England and I will keep you updated, for now I must celebrate back at home with my family. I am back now and I have decided to move my family back to the southern colonies. There is people here who could have easily paid off their debt in a few months, but they've grown to be too tired and exhausted to do a lot of work in one day because it is so hot. And even in winter, it doesn't get that cold. There's a lot of hills and swamps in the part of Georgia i'm working on. I'm helping out on a farm on a plantation for four days a week and then the next three days i'm helping around the plantation owners house. I was Catholic, so on Sundays I would worship the word of God and my beliefs, like a belief may be that the bible was a error-free, direct word from God. We have a democratic government in which lets all of us citizens participate. Other colonies had this type of government and we could vote and help make laws.

Here in Georgia, only the rich white man can vote, I disagree with that, because I think women should be able to. Also it's very hot, humid and arid here to. I feel bad for the workers on the plantation when it's summer.
In addition i'm glad we moved to Georgia because if we would of stayed in England we would still be poor and livin on the streets. But here we are very wealthy and have good lives. There are still some things I wish I could change but in all I love it here. I wish I could help other poor people in England to come to America and live better lives like my family did, because Georgia is the best thing that has happen to me and my family.

My name is John FeFe, and I live on master Bubba's plantation. I am and have been a slave since the day I was born. Right now I am in Virginia. I have been to very many plantations but I have always gotten traded. Life is very hard here. I have to work 16 hours a day, everyday, no matter what. We all have hope tho, that one day just something will happen, master gets shot or something so we all can try to escape, or if God can use his wonderful powers, and give us time to escape.
I believe that slavery is very wrong, but I can't do anything about it. We barely get anything to eat, or any time to rest. It has been extremely hard sometimes, in the humid, blazing, summer days. But I have learned to put up with it. Master says that one day, we will become free. At nights I lay dreaming about the thought of being free, and being able to do what I want, and not being forced to do something and if I don't I will get whipped or even worst. I came to the southern colonies as a payment for my bad choices that I have made earlier in my life. I was hoping that I could pay off my debt eventually one day. Yesterday, one of the slaves almost died because of how hot it was, and he could not stop working or he would get whipped. The summer here in Virginia is terrible, the blazing hot sun almost kills us all. It was really rocky where we were. We all believe in God and most of us are Christian. My job is picking cotton. That is what I do almost every day for Master. The government here was self government, and a lot of people had slaves. Since I was a slave I could not be apart of making laws or voting. The government here was similar to government in other colonies. And as I lay awake tonight writing this, I am hoping that master doesn't catch me or I will be in big trouble. I will hope for the best.

My name is Sebastian, I live in southern Georgia becouse I got a little far behind on my taxes and I don't want to rot in jail. I thought it would be easy work in the nice warm area. What I thought was badly wrong.
It was hot and muggy and I did all the work on this huge plantation the owners didn't lift a finger! Also there was forts all over the place! And I started to think jail would have been better, but then I meet Lilith the plantation owner's daughter and there is no limit of what a guy like me would do for a girl like her. So I waited, and waited, and waited till I finally paid of my debt with all the hard work I've done.
After that I was free and still got to live in America. I had two sons,Timothy & John, and one daughter, Mary, with my new wife Lilith. I lived a good life after all that work paid off because now I'm the one who doesn't lift a finger on the plantation.

My name is Sir John Philip lll and I live in the amazing colony of Georgia in the Americas. I owed my uncle a pencil and he was going to put me in jail until another Englishman named Sir James Edward Oglethorpe thought of taking all of the people that owed debts to anyone to come to the Americas to work till you can pay back your debt. So I sign a document that stated that I had to work in Georgia for 2 months. After the two months I was able to be free in this amazing new world. I lived in a little Tp made by one of my Indian friends that showed me how to use fish and other dead animals to farm.

I thought that it was going to be cool and low temperature but no it's hot and very humidity. William Penn came by the plantation to talk to Little Joe is my owner. William Penn was the founder Pennsylvania and he brought the quakers to America.

Hello my name is John Hampton. I have two children Mary and Catherine and a beautiful wife named Abitha. My family means everything to me that’s why I am traveling to America so I can work in Georgia to pay off my debt. My debt is from not paying back the money I had borrowed. I have now been in jail for a five or six months and my family is struggling. So I have decided to go and work off my debt on the farms in Georgia.

My family is very catholic and we would go every Sunday when I was out of jail. I haven’t been to church since I was out and what most people would call free. But free here and England is different, men would always be watching you everywhere you go and if you did the slightest wrong they would stomp all over you. I just hope now that I’m going to Georgia my family will be safe.

I am now in Georgia and I have been working on the tobacco farm for a few months. They don’t pay much here so it’s gonna be a while until I come home to my family. I really like it here in America. I hope one day me and my family can move here one day. The weather is really humid and hot. The summer days are very long. I am not aloud to vote or even be apart of the government since I am an indentured servant. If your not apart of the government then they won’t tell you about what happens all they tell you is the new laws.

I have now paid off my debt and I am traveling back to Europe to be with my family. I can not explain how much I miss them and I can not wait to see them and how much my beautiful daughters have grown. I hope my family will move here to the colonies with me because I really love it here and I think they would too.

Sorry I was just yelling at one of my slaves, because i'm rich and have land in Virginia so I own slaves that work on my land so i don't have to do all of the work alone. My wife has died and i have six kids who are all between the ages of 23 and 10.I was born into a rich family then started selling some slaves to get more money.I am not a religious person because of an incident that happened to my mom when i was young, I had lived in Maryland but then I met the love of my life meredith. Meredith and I got married and moved to Virginia.
In virginia we had our six babies but something went wrong during labor and my love of my life dyed. Then it was just me and the kiddos. But I'm hoping to find someone as special as her. So to keep my mind off of her i bought some more slave and kept my farm growing. Now in Virginia it is very hot so i was able to keep my crops at a good paste. Now the government was very strict, no women were allowed to vote but men where(only if you were white and rich though). The environment isn't very calm nor isn't it total madness.

My name is Marley, I traveled here with John Smith. John Smith and I are very close friends, we’ve known each other ever since we were kids. But enough about me and John, I’m going to talk about one of my favorite adventures with John. We were on our way to Virginia with a few people with us, we were going to Virginia to make profit. If you don’t know what profit means it basically means money.

So John and I agreed to go to Virginia to look for gold, it was a long and rough journey but we got through it and here we are. When we got to Virginia there was already a colony there. They had houses made out of wood and the people in the village wore fancy outfits and had small gold knives hanging around their belts. I’m guessing that’s just for protection…...I hope. When John saw the gold he freaked out and ran into the village, I tried to stop him but he was just to fixated on the gold. It’s super hot in Virginia by the way, it’s kind of humid too. It was kinda hard to breathe. The people saw John and got out their knives and pointed them towards John.

He put his hands up and said, “ We aren’t here to hurt you, we actually just want to make peace. I came out the bushes and ran next to John and just stood there, awkwardly. They then pointed their knives towards me, I put my hands up and said I’m peaceful too. They were Native Americans and we grew tobacco and shares the gold, I had to work on plantations to help grow the tobacco. John finally decided to name them the Virginia Colony.

Life was kinda tough. I believe that being able to pay off out debts is a good thing. I have to farm, that is my job, that's what I do for a living. I am a Protestant and I love going to church.
We try to keep the spanish out we are the buffer colony. Life in the southern colonies are tough because you have to pay off a lot of debts and it takes about two to three years to fully pay off your debts. It is different in each colony, like people came to Georgia to pay debts not anywhere else really. We can not vote because only the people who vote are white men who own land. Georgia is nice and it helps a lot of people.

Then another man walked up to me " Since you have bought land in this colony you can vote for the leader of it.You my also like to join a church there are many different types that you can chose from." "Alright I'll do that " I said as he walked off. "I wonder if they have a Protestant church around here" I said to myself.

I have decided that I want to move to Maryland, because I've heard they created Maryland so Catholic people, like me, could have a free place of religion. The reason why I am moving from England, is because in England you are NOT aloud to worship any religion. If you even try they will throw you down into dungeons for like twenty years and they will only give you water. At age 15 it was a hard life for me but since im 16 now, I have decided to escape to go start a life in Maryland so I can worship freely. We always thank Lord Baltimore for setting up this wonderful colony and for letting us settle here. Here on our farm we grow lots of tobacco and then sell it to make a living and a good profit. Jacob is not a very wealthy man but he does have the option to help make laws unlike some of the other men in our colony. Even the black men couldn't vote. I moved from England to here. I came here to make money.
The environment in Georgia is amazing. You can see the landscape, rivers, and the forests. We also have this new thing called German beer.I try to take care of my slaves but when they still from me I have to make a excample out of them. I found a slave named George stealing from me so I gave him 10 lashings in the back.
The jobs here are okay but if you want money you need slaves to harvest your crops.People have very different religions here than england. The government it so much better than england and in some of the other colonies as well. You can even vote for your own laws.

My name is Alfred Wormhart and I live in Georgia and I came here to work on the forts and then stay in them on the border of Georgia to keep the Spanish from evading our people and our colonies. If the Spanish do come and try to take us we will destroy their hopes and dreams of having land in our colonies. We started building the fort I am going to stay in with the other soldiers. We are putting windows and little spokes to look through and put our guns through and fight whoever comes in our way which will most likely be the Spanish but it could also be someone else as well I mean you never know. The environment is hot and humid but there are several lakes so we take a swim every now and then. We have church every Sunday and Wednesday nights. We have a democratic government as well as most other places. Last month I voted for several laws.

My name is Adaline Mills and I'm living in Maryland now, because of my religion, back home my family and I were treated very harshly. Ever since people treated Catholics harshly I was really hoping for a reasonable colony for Catholics. But once I moved here, things have been great accept for the weather. The weather has got me pretty frustrated cause it has been hot and really humid. Besides the weather there is really nothing else to complain about, cause there isn't anything about the government. If there was anything wrong with it I could just bring it up at the colony's next assembly. I've been looking for a job for awhile but there so many jobs to choose from but one did catch my eye, I could be a fruit farmer out of tobacco or wheat or corn I chose to be involved with fruit cause who doesn't like fruit, I start monday. I can't wait! I think that Maryland is the place for me

But then again that's why i'm here for 3 to 4 years, aren't I the special one. Oh! I almost forget the most important thing there is to know about me, my family. My big, huge, awesome, family. Well when i'm home anyway, for starters my chicken stays in the house, my goat stays in the shed by my house, and my precious little son. Well sadly my son had to stay with his grandparents while I was gone. Due to his mother's death after he was born, my little boy Toby couldn't stay home by himself and that's why he's at his grandparents house right now hopefully outside playing ball with grandpa. "Move it" said the plantation owners. sorry can't tell you the end of my story much longer got to head back to work. "plow, plow, pick, pick, plant, plant, sweat, sweat, grow, grow". Work was so much hard but hey that's life.

My name is Annabelle White and I have just moved to Maryland to start a new life in the Southern colonies. I decided to come to Maryland for religious purposes. Here in Maryland, we have religious freedom, so anybody here can worship freely and won't be stopped because of their beliefs. This colony was especially created for Catholics like myself. I am currently a farmer on a small farm just trying to make a living. When I came to Maryland, I was hoping to start a new life where I'd have new opportunities and chances at a better life where'd I'd be able to have religious freedom.
We have the perfect climate where, as a farmer, I'm able to grow crops on my farm including tobacco, rice, and more. The climate here does result in mosquitoes, but thankfully we're still able to grow crops and we're not affected by them too much. T
Many colonists cannot vote, like myself, but only white, wealthy men who own property are able to vote.

I'm a slave so what kind of name do you think i would have, Tucker, no that is my last name. Ok that is me, but down here in the south it is super hot and humid. Mr Micheal J. Caboose is my master and if i don't call him Caboose he gets really mad. Then he starts thinking of spikey kittens then his voice gets really deep and he says his full name then attacks you. It's really really weird don't ask me ask him wait don't ask him because he will do the thing i just told you about.
I want to say I am his favorite manly because i don't do as much work as the others, but i still work out in the fields picking cotton and growing tobacco for hours. It is really hard work but if you do it right you don't get whipped for a week. Yeah it seems like it would be harsh, but Master I mean Caboose says he is one of the nicer slave and plantation owners there is in the world. He says some owners whip slaves for no reason, just to do it.

Hi my name is Joe and i am from England and i was forced to go to jail because I didn't have all me debts paid off so then I decided to just move to the southern colony of Georgia because in Georgia they will give you time to pay of all of your debts by working at fields and planting crops at farms. One more reason why I decided to move to Georgia is because when i lived over there in England we didn't have a lot of freedom so in the southern colonies you have some freedom. So right now i'm working at a farm in Georgia so I don't have to go to jail anymore and some of the stuff im having to do are plant tobacco, rice and many other plants and crops. There are many other people working at the same farm as me that moved from England for the same reasons as I did. I currently am 29 years old and have no wife and no kids so i am pretty lonely. I work in the fields all day and then I go and stay in the little houses that the farm owner everybody that works on the farm. 1 year later. It has been 1 year since I started working on this farm and i have finally came up with enough money to pay off my debts. Now that my debts are paid off I can leave this farm and go build a house . I have now found a wife and the house has been completed and now me and my wife are about to have 3 kids.

That is the only reason I am going to the new world. As i am getting on a boat to the new world I see this big black bird and I feel like it is telling me something like the New World is a bad thing. I hope it isn't because if it is it could quit literally kill me. And i am the most beautiful male of all the land. As I walk into the ship I hug my brother and tell him goodby my brother goodby. Will i am at the new land I will get all the money of the world and use it on my brother.

I have finally got on the boat and i am already feeling seasick. I start eating the food and i just can't stop it's like a am stress eating or something. We finally touch the land and i can't get off the boat I have gained like 15 pounds on that trip all 20 of my shipmates die and I am the only one. I reach the new land and i kiss the ground. All i can think about is if there are other people here. I am so thirsty and i don't know where the Sea water had been so I go exploring. I haven't found anything for about 2 hours. Day finally falls and i find this little colony. I find the leader of the colony and he gives me shelter 5 days have past and i have a 7 inch beard. I ask the leader for gold and he gives it to me. Finally it is the time to go home and i will miss this place and hopefully come back some day. I start walking to my ship and it isn't there. I wait for 5 hours and I die to dysentery.
