It really started with a mentality of knocking on all doors and seeing what opened. However, it turned into this opportunity to be a part of something much bigger than myself and live out a life of service. I always thought I would go straight into the corporate world after getting my masters, however, now I am thinking I might want to go and get my PhD. Either way, I think the Corp provides me time to really think about my next steps while also going through a transformative experience in a new city while doing something extremely challenging but rewarding. Katy Dulany

I am extremely passionate about DEI and have always wanted to develop my own diversity training or bridge-building curriculum. Right now, I also want to get my PhD and become a college professor. I think TFA will provide me a new perspective from which to accomplish these goals, maybe even entirely changing the way I thought they would look. I think no matter what I do, I aspire to be an advocate for education and for social justice. I think this experience will forever change the way I view and interact with the world around me, and will make me a better human being to advocate for authentic promotions of DEI. Katy Dulany

My motivation to join the corps stemmed from my belief in the importance of education and my passion for learning. I have always loved school and being in the classroom, but, more importantly, I also know how crucial it is for every student to have access to a good education. Education creates opportunity, and every single person deserves that opportunity. Many of the problems in our country (income inequality, racism, mass incarceration, etc.) boil down to a lack of opportunity for many people, which begins with a lack of quality education. Furthermore, I knew that I wanted to be an agent of change and make a positive difference in the lives of others. With these goals and beliefs in mind, Teach for America seemed like the perfect opportunity, and I hope to be able to make a difference during my two years in the corps and beyond.--

Connor Catlett

This question is a bit tougher for me to answer because I do not have a clear picture of my long-term career aspirations at this point. Nevertheless, I am certain that I want to be a leader, fighting for social justice and helping those in need. Teach for America will be a terrific starting point in achieving that goal. I am sure that my experience in the corps will make me a better leader, communicator, teacher, and person. After the two years, I can definitely see myself continuing to teach. I can also see myself continuing my education and transitioning into other sectors. No matter what path I take, though, I am committed to fighting against inequity and working for change that helps all people.--

Connor Catlett

I started my educational journey after a life setback. I am a product of addicted parents and a divorced household. I knew firsthand the struggles these students endure every day and I wanted to be their light in the darkness. After working a few years in a "public-private" school I knew I needed more fulfillment, education was not just a career for me but a journey. I learned of TFA through a class I was taking as an undergrad and I just fell in love with the mission TFA stood for. I have seen firsthand how students fall through the cracks because of their economical and cultural background and I wanted to be a part of something that broke barriers in education. Children are a blank slate and they have so much potential even at an early age, that potential must be nurtured and embraced in every classroom across America. I knew that TFA would not only humble me but give me the opportunity to make a difference and add a little spark to the classroom. Education was always my calling and I believe TFA with strengthen that calling. -Ashlyn Wilson

My senior year of college I became interested in the public health sector and specifically in Health Policy/Public Policy. Public Policy and Education are intertwined and decisions are constantly being made at local, state, and federal levels directly effecting students, teachers, and their families without the consideration of the voices and concerns of those students and teachers. I would like to continue to teach to gain experience and perspectives to eventually become an informed advocate for students and teachers in a role that allows me to contribute to these policy decisions.

Because every child does not have equal opportunity to education, I wanted to play a part in changing that because every child deserves an excellent education. I have benefitted from teachers who have invested in me and helped me reach my goals, and I believe that every child deserves to have this support system in their lives and deserves to come to school and feel loved, valued, and important. Sadly, I know this is not the case, and I want to help all children believe in themselves and to discover their potential.

As a first generation college student, education has always been a priority of mine. I have always wanted to make a change in the world, but I never knew how. When one of my friends joined the Memphis corps my sophomore year of college, TFA immediately caught my attention. The opportunity to make a change and live in an awesome area? Sign me up. Having gone to school K-12 in a TFA district, I knew the need for good teachers in high-need schools was massive. Not knowing exactly what I wanted to do after graduation and having two years to spare, I decided to ED apply to TFA and I could not be happier with my decision. I live my life focused on supporting others and meeting people where they are.

I joined the corps because of my experience as a Summer camp counselor. In that role, I had the opportunity to see growth in my campers and my campers looked up to me as a role model. Knowing that my influence and passion could have positive impacts on a kid's life really piqued my interest in becoming a teacher, specifically with TFA. Furthermore, I believe that while students have a lot of knowledge to gain from us (teachers), we also have a lot of knowledge to gain from them. The two-way street that is education is really important to me because I love teaching, but also learning from kids as well.
-Aidan Graham

I am really unsure of my plan after TFA. I originally wanted to attend medical school; however, I believe that my true passion is in education. If I do go into medicine, my experience in TFA would be vital for two reasons: addressing the inequity that pervades the healthcare system and bridging the gap between medicine and education. Inequity is a flaw that pervades both the education and healthcare system. Having experience in combatting education inequity with TFA will translate into my passion for fighting against healthcare inequity in my future. Secondly, the lack of awareness and education provided by physicians to patients about medicine in extremely lacking. It is one of my passions to help make the meaning and understanding of medicine more accessible to those not with a medical background. The educational training I receive with TFA will help me implement teaching strategies that I can use to make medicine more accessible to everyone.
-Aidan Graham

I joined the corps because I have always had a passion to lead and teach children. I didn’t major in education in college but near the end of my journey I had a yearning to be inside the classroom to make an impact after interning at a child advocacy center. I didn’t think it was possible for me to be in the classroom so soon until I found TFA. I think it is so important for all students to be provided a great and adequate education regardless of their background or where they may reside. Children can’t choose their upbringing or where they live so I feel as if it is our duty to provide quality education that will give them the tools to succeed and improve their situation in the future as they grow. As a future educator, I also realize to provide these things we must really connect with students to serve as a mentor and become a safe place for kids who may not have that at home. -Alexis Harvey

The corps will allow me to confront the educational inequity I've seen as a student so that I can serve as an advocate for change outside of the classroom. TFA’s mission speaks directly to my core values because I dream of working with other countries as a Foreign Service Officer (FSO) to improve all educational systems. Before advocating for global change, I want to learn about and help improve the U.S. education system now to actualize my mission of transcending income and language barriers to expand educational opportunities in the U.S.

Josh Sulkin

And when people started asking me what I wanted to do after graduation, it became more and more real that I would be putting my energy into something new and hopefully something positive. I joined the corps because my teachers (both in the classroom and outside of it) have guided me through life with love, compassion, and strong curiosity.

As a kid, I loved learning and really valued my teachers- especially those who took a creative approach to lessons. I still remember eating "pioneer" food in my 5th grade history class so we could taste what people were eating on the Oregon Trail. We tried hard tack, apple cider vinegar lemonade, and other delicacies. At that moment, as I was gagging on the worst food I had ever tasted, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to run a classroom full of creativity and contextual learning. As I grew older and went away to college, I shifted gears and believed a life in academia was more desirable. However, once I heard about the teacher shortage, I changed my mind once again. Although I would eventually love to get a PhD in history, giving back by teaching, and teaching with the corps, was my next step. I thought about the impact my teachers had on me and how each one has helped me get to where I am. I joined the corps because I believe every child should have a teacher who really values each student and their education.

-Sarah Underhill

I truly believe that many issues facing this country (and the world) such as income inequality, racism, mass incarceration, and so many other things stem from a lack of quality education, and becoming a teacher in a under funded school district is a wonderful way to fight these injustices at the root.

The main reason I joined the corps is because I agree with the values and mission of TFA and I’m passionate about education. I also believe it's important to not only place teachers where they’re needed most, but to battle deeply rooted and systemic inequities at their core. I think the foundations for solving these socio-economic disparities that have been so tied to the history of our nation starts with the classroom and with the opportunities children are given in it. I want to be a part of this change that allows all children the welcoming and supportive environments that they need to not only thrive, but grow.

Also through my experiences in school, I’ve learned which environments are the most productive, and the qualities that best allow for collective growth. I think that the most effective classrooms are classrooms where teachers take the time to learn about each student and capitalize on their individual strengths. I believe my time in the corps will allow me to create these environments, and emulate these qualities that my most influential teachers have had.

Brooke Valentine

My university's Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted a career fair for students with marginalized identities and upon attendance I met a wonderful TFA recruiter named Shaina. Shaina invited me to get coffee where we discussed my post-graduate plans in pursuits of PhD to research identity formation through racial-ethnic socialization. My scholastic pursuits and passions for DIESJ work go hand in hand, so TFA seemed like the perfect space for me to explore the intersection of social justice, human advocacy, and my desire to build community. I believe TFA is the perfect space for me to harness my ability to share knowledge, create lasting impact, and learn. I'm really excited to teach 5-8th graders as well! - Sophia Buskirk

With the litany of legislation permeating in some states in an attempt to both disenfranchise and dehumanize whole groups of people, it is simply the time. Children are the most vulnerable among us and need to be empowered at a young age in order to be able to advocate for themselves as adults. By ensuring equity in education, this can be achieved. At this time, LGBTQ+ and students of color are having their history and achievements erased in an attempt to minimize their contributions to society and to dehumanize them. They are legally being ostracized from their peers, which creates unsafe environments for them, decreasing learning outcomes, increases negative mental health outcomes, and as a result, their achievement and potential life outcomes. In this attempt, individuals, states, agencies, and entities are perpetuating this false narrative to make the aforementioned groups feel less than in order to make it so that others do not empathize with them. This must stop, and this is why I joined the Corps.

-Sean Allen

I didn't want to go to grad school immediately after undergrad and realizing that meant I needed to figure out a post-grad plan. Their mission truly inspired me so much and made me realize that some of my most meaningful experiences in life involved working with children. I joined the corps because I can't think of a better way to spend my time as I figure out what I want to do with my life: helping to correct the opportunity gap in American education and making an impact on the lives of children who will build this country's future.

My long term goal is to become a lawyer and work to advocate with marginalized and disadvantaged communities. I am not sure in what capacity this looks like yet, whether as a legal aid to a non-profit, a criminal defense attorney/public defender or in juvenile justice. I believe this experience will allow me to become a more confident leader and therefore successful in my other careers. However, I hope to gain experience and knowledge during my time as a teacher so that I can better understand the individuals and communities I will be working with. I hope I will come away from this experience with knowledge of how, as a lawyer, I can assist in shattering the school to prison pipeline and other issues that can lead to juvenile imprisonment.

- Abbey Dumas

I joined the TFA corps because I believe that teaching is the front line of progress. I have always been drawn to a career that would enable me to serve my community and country. Throughout college, I explored different modes of service through volunteering and found that I had a more meaningful impact in smaller, more focused organisations. This is because progress is often incremental and takes time and persistence. As a teacher, I will be able to dedicate the necessary time and attention to helping my students achieve their full potential. I know that the experience in TFA will ground me in the realities that communities across America face, and I hope to build upon what I learn first-hand in my future professional and personal life.

I hope to work in public policy eventually. My time in the corps will help me learn first-hand what communities across America really need. Some policies and actions can seem like a great idea on paper but be ultimately out of touch with reality. I will use my experience to advocate for those marginalised by society. In addition, teaching in a public school will help me learn how the system works. In order to adapt the systems in place to be more equitable, one must first understand the specific characteristics that are marginalising certain communities. What we observe on the surface may be caused by something completely different to what we expect.

I joined the corps to be the change I wish to see in the world. When growing up, I knew I wanted to go to college and become an asset to my community but I was unsure what that looked like. I eventually applied to be a substitute teacher during college. As I grew in the school I was in, I learned what it means to be a teacher as well as understanding the dedication you must have for education. I got promoted and got to learn more about how everybody can't just be teachers but it requires special people. Seeing that our community needs dedicated teachers, I decided to be a SOLUTION. So here I am trying to be equipped to be exactly what my community needs. This brings me to the corps so I can not just be dedicated to my students but I can be qualified to stay in my role. - Yours Truly Zibiah :)

I joined the corps because it was a fantastic intersection of two passions I have had for a long time: learning and equity. Providing a valuable education that will help students feel seen and heard as well as supported through their educational and life endeavors is something I have been very excited to do, and the corps has given me an opportunity to do that for students and school systems that need it most. As an individual who holds a variety of marginalized identities, I want to also serve as an educator that students feel they can connect to in ways they cannot with other teachers who may not share those identities.

Literrius Miller

I joined the corps to support Teach For America's mission: "...to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence".

My interest in education dates back to elementary school when I would bring home old textbooks that I used to teach my elementary school-age cousins during the summers. Then, in high school, I participated in a CO-OP program that allowed me to work as a teacher’s aide.

My oldest daughter was born when I was 17 years old. Balancing motherhood, college, and work became challenging because I had very little help and suffered from adverse childhood experiences. Life was further complicated by the scrutiny of older adults labeling me as a teenage mother and an embarrassment. Nonetheless, I managed to look above the horizon to seek ways to improve my circumstances.

The military attracted me because of the provided services and opportunities. During my time as a soldier, I had the incredible pleasure of tutoring many of my subordinates and peers in many subjects such as Math, English, and World Religions. However, the most significant achievement was teaching Finite Math with no prior knowledge of the subject to a peer who took the class online. His passing grade resulted in him receiving his bachelor’s degree and promotion from First Lieutenant to Captain. Throughout our time together, he became more confident.

I look forward to transitioning into a career that will honor my innate abilities and provide opportunities for me to continue to serve. I can use my proven leadership skills, knowledge, and experience to have a positive effect on our youth and their families.

My motto is “Learning Today for Tomorrow’s Success”. I want to inspire children to keep working towards a goal and never give up on their dreams.

Shavonde Chase

When I came across Teach for America, I knew I had found the path I had been searching for. After studying psychology for four years as an undergraduate, I understand the significance of feeling heard, valued, and appreciated. I am passionate about ensuring that students can recognize their potential and creating an environment that allows them to have equal opportunity to exercise their strengths. I joined the corps because I want to serve students, acknowledge the educational inequity regarding race and socioeconomic status, and foster a positive, encouraging classroom environment.

-Mary Elizabeth Pontin

During my last year at college, Every Campus A Refuge has a chapter at my school. Which the campus in partnership with ECAR and a resettlement agency, we as a campus provide housing for refugee families for their first 3-6 months of arriving in the U.S. While serving the family, I realized when I first came to the United States, how non-profit organization helps us. I also think about the ESOL classes. Looking back I am so thankful for my teachers who also become mentors. Because of this, I want to do the same for the students and help them in their learning English and their education.
- Nuam San
