The whole battle of Vimy Ridge was focused on taking over a high-ground, or strategic point to divert German forces from France's attack.
This is very significant for Canada especially. Canada at the time was not seen as an independent country, they were under Britain's name and command. This battle was proof that we were no longer 'owned' by Britain. Its significant because it showed that we were no longer in the shadows, and we were strong and underestimated. This battle is the first since World War One that all four Canadian divisions fought together. When Premier Pierre Trudeau was elected, he promised that we would gain our own Constitution. In 1982, April 17th, the Canadian constitution act came into play, with the help of all provinces - except Quebec(of course). The act created the Charter Of Rights and Freedoms. 
This is a significant piece of history for us within the government.
