Edward is explaining to the audience that if they do not turn their lives over to God, that he will have no mercy on them. He states that they will have to endure the pain of everlasting suffering from a vengeful God. He is trying to instill fear into their minds to get them to turn to God. Instead of the more modern take, saying that God is a very merciful God, he says that he isn't. He also states that even to bear the suffering for one moment would be too much to handle, but that they will have to suffer it for eternity.

In this quote Edward uses a lot of imagery and tries to explain to us that God looks upon sinners as worse than the most venomous serpent. You can just see the disgust that God has on humans. He is trying to insinuate that God is extremely angry with everyone that sins, and that they deserve nothing less than to go to hell.
