William Harvey (1578-1657)

Studied medicine in Cambridge and Padua, worked as a doctor in London. Published his book called An Anatomical Account of the motion of the heart and blood, in 1628. He became a doctor to king Charles I.

Harvey’s achievements:

-Proved that the heart acts as a pump, pumping blood around the body. He did this by:

-Dissecting live cold-blooded animals whose hearts beat slowly so he could see the movement of each muscle in the heart.

-Dissecting human bodies to build up detailed knowledge of the heart.

-Proving that the body has a one-way system for the blood- he tried to pump liquid past the values in the veins but could not do so.

-Calculating the amount of blood flowing thought the arteries each hour was 3 times the weight of a man. This shows that the same blood is flows though around the body.
