Last year, one of the kindergarten students would not engage along with the others in class. He would self-soothe by playing with his lip, and if asked a question would only shrug.

I built trust by quietly reflecting his feeling, and giving him space. I let him sit near me, and did a breathing exercise with the whole class. I invited him to lunch and used games to get to know each other, and helped him ground. I often become the toy, model vulnerability that it’s okay to make mistakes.

At the start of the year I meet briefly (“minute” meetings) with every student in the school to introduce myself and get to know them— their interests, family, where they’re from, etc. I make myself available for lunches with kids individually or in groups building relationship so they feel safe and comfortable with me.

Someone had a disagreement with me and was roaring at me, getting louder and louder, not letting me speak. That is a trauma trigger for me. I felt my heart racing, and fists clenching as I went into fight or flight mode. What helped me get back to centre was moving away, taking deep breaths and checking in with my body. Then I read a good book that made me smile.

This was last school year: I had a student from another country who didn´t speak english or spanish. At first it was a challenge to communicate classroom rules to him and for him to understand them, but by the second semester he manage English conversation very well, but still had a hard time following classroom rules.

There is a four year old who is very impulsive and active. When he is frustrated or upset, e.g. when he another kid is playing with or using something he wants, he tends to escalate quickly and pinch or push peers. Often the adults miss the trigger, or miss opportunity to support him in navigating the trigger. Adults are frustrated with him and parents want him out of the camp.

Ask for co-regulation when I'm feeling overwhelmed, try to regulate my voice tone (Im a very loud person haha), and add more strategies to the ones I already do (I give 5 minutes breaks between each class, breathing breaks, yoga poses, chair exercises).
