Students and teachers are comfortable and feel safe with each other, which shows that time and effort has been put in to ensure that good relationships are established and developed. Exploration is encouraged with non-intrusive documentation of learning taking place. Teachers focus on opportunities for 'on the spot' teaching and reflection with LPAs and ATLs, as well as doing their utmost to make sure that learning spaces engage students' interests.

2. What are the benefits of play?

Play develops thinking skills, problem-solving, and language expression, as well as other cognitive skills. It also provides opportunities for social development and the pursuit of interests.

3. How do we evidence learning?

Through observation and anecdotal notes. Through discussion and conversation or quotes from students. Through action that students take at home based on what they have learnt.

Feels organic as play is their natural instincts

○Section 2 – What are the benefits of play?
It leads to sustainable learning as students are most likely to retain the information/ fact that they have unpacked while playing as they experience it first hand. Problem solving skills develops in students naturally. For instance, they can be seen and heard negotiating during sand play to swap toys.

○Section 3 – How do we evidence learning in early years?
Anywhere and everywhere, most often I am running to grab a piece of paper to scribble or  an i-pad to record an anecdote happening in the cafeteria
because I just heard a learner applying the concept learned in class to her/his snack.

Students learn through relationships with others and their environment. This includes student initiated play and teacher initiated experiences. Teachers observe and support  agency where appropriate.

What are the benefits of play?

Playing and interacting with peers and adults in their environment supports a child’s developing understanding of the world around them. Play enables a child’s oral language and symbolic competence to grow.

Play-based learning includes opportunities for students to:

  • Share
  • Investigate
  • Reflect


How do we evidence learning in early years?

In our school we use Seesaw to document and share student growth and development with their families. Photos, videos, voice reflections and examples of their learning are captured.

A play-based learning environment encourages talking, reading, writing, and thinking. Schools should use a variety of strategies to help children learn skills and understand concepts.

What are the benefits of play? 
Students are able to develop their ATL skills which also helps with student engagement.  Students can also develop their problem-solving skills.


 How do we evidence learning in the early years?
