This situation actually happened to me during my junior year. I was in a car accident and my car was totaled. Luckily it was not my fault so I was given a large amount of money to choose a nice car that would suit my needs for the years to come. I choose a Honda Accord for many reasons.

Works Cited: http://www.realcartips.com/newcars/223-factors-when-choosing-car.shtml
1. Price
When purchasing a car, price is the biggest factor because unfortunately not everyone has thousands and thousands of dollars to drop on a new car. You should find a car in your price range that you can afford to buy outright or can afford monthly payments for a lease or loan.
2. Reliability/Quality
You buy a car so you can go from point A to point B. When looking at a car make sure that the car is in good working condition and doesn't have any damage that would cause the car to break down. The quality of the car is also something to take into consideration because you can get leather/cloth, color, style of car, and many more options in cars. You can get a cheap car but the quality will be below standards that cars made today have.
3. Cost of Ownership
Can you afford maintenance of the car? Insurance? Different cars have different costs of owning. A sports car will cost more to insure and fix than an average car. Honda cars are less expensive and require less maintenance than an Audi.
4. Features
I personally had a small list of features I wanted in a car. Such as heated seats, leather seats, tinted windows, bluetooth/AUX, and number of seats. When purchasing a car these features usually come standard in most modern cars but it is nice to check when the dealer to verify

Salesmen use many different tatics to get you to purchase a car.
They will pressure you with aggressive tatics, hidden prices, and give you bad information. They will use big signs in red to create urgency so you'll want to buy cars faster or want to drive off the lot that day. They will use blue to create trust and have you feel that you are in a safe place. They use social media, signs, tv ads, radio, and any other form of advertising out today.
Works Cited: Consumerism (Online Book)
http://www.daveramsey.com/blog/6-tactics-used-car-salesman

1. Lemon Law
A manufacturer's warranty is what makes the manufacturer legally responsible for repairs to the consumer's vehicle or good. It is a form of guarantee. An expressed warranty is typically a written warranty. An implied warranty, unlike an expressed warranty, is not written. The law imposes these obligations on the manufacturer, the seller or both as a matter of public policy. These vary from state to state.
2. Federal Used Car Law
Federal law is applicable to any car dealer or seller who sells more than six used cars a year. Used cars are those that have been driven more than the limited mileage from moving the car from one site to the next, or that is added on during consumer test drives
3. Warranty Information
Any warranty information must be displayed on the buyer's guide, including any warranties that you and the dealer agree upon during negotiations. If a used car is still under manufacturer warranty the buyer's guide must reflect this as well
Works Cited: http://cars.lovetoknow.com/used-cars/laws-protecting-customers-buying-used-cars
