The Louisiana territory was purchased in 1803 by president Thomas Jefferson. He originally wanted only New Orleans for trading but France wanted to get rid of all of the lands they owned in the Americas to focus on Europe. So Thomas Jefferson ended up purchasing the whole land almost doubling the land of the United States. This led to the civil war which started debates on if slavery should be expanded into this new land.

The North said it shouldn't the South said it should. So the Missouri Compromise was created. In the compromise, the North would get Maine added to the union as a free state and there would be a line drawn over through the Louisiana purchase and any state who applied to become a state above that line would not allow slavery and any state that applied to be a state below that line would allow slavery. This led to the civil war by just putting off the issue until later.

The territory they got from the Mexican- American war was split into 2 parts the Utah territory and the New Mexico territory. They let slavery be decided by popular sovereignty there. They also added California as a free state. With this compromise, the fugitive slave act was also passed. This act made it easier for slave owners in the South the get their escaped slaves back. Another agreement was the slave trade in Washington D.C. was ended showing an example for the rest of the country. This led to the civil war because it divided the north and south even more making slavery an even bigger debate.
