These items are non-biodegradable and stay in the landfill for hundreds of years. If we continue to expand landfills we take over areas that once was home to a variety of animals and plants. These animals and plants are then losing their how which increases the likelihood for then to become endangered do to the fact that their environment is being destroyed.

Plastic and other recyclables in water can cause animals to accidentally ingest the waste. This can lead to animals becoming sick or can lead to their deaths. Animals can be affected even if they do not ingest the recyclable materials. The effects of throwing a way even one recyclable item can have a lasting effect on the earth.
