Ralph hides in some bushes while he finds a solution to his wounds. He can see the castle guard posts and sees Robert. The party was about to begin and everyone was eating, Ralph looks for some fruit trees and eats from them, then he reaches the center of a clearing and sees a strange skull on a stick. Ralph stealthily recovers the stick and turns it into a defense tool. Back near the castle, he hears the usual dance and notices that the two twins are on guard, so he approaches and they tell him that they have forced them to join the tribe. The guards reveal to him that the following day they will start hunting him, they will make a line from one side of the island to the other in such a way as to comb it all and they will make shouts as signals. He reveals his hiding place, saying that the next morning he will hide in a nearby bush, so he does, in fact he feels safe there too. Suddenly he hears voices and realizes that the two Sammerics have revealed his hiding place, someone tries to enter but he immediately hits them with his spear; he gets some smoke and taking advantage of this he goes into the forest, however, he doesn't know what to do, whether: break the cordon, climb a tree or hide and let them pass. He decides to hide while he hears the constant cries of the line they created, then he ducks into a bush and the only way to see him was to duck and look down. Meanwhile the fire expands more and more, almost as if it wanted to eat the forest. One of the tribe arrives and stops in front of the bush and drops down to check. Ralph, scared, starts screaming and attacks the savage. He then runs away in a hurry but in the meantime, he hears the tribe's cordon approaching behind him and the flames begin to grow. getting closer and closer to him, fortunately she manages to get to the beach but now without hope. He unexpectedly sees a man with a military cap, meanwhile all the others arrive on the beach, painted in the face and with spears. The officer asks who is the boss and Ralph answers, the man replies, saying that he would certainly have expected better from the English boys and in desperation, all the boys burst into tears.

The title of the work is partly allegorical and refers to Beelzebub, or evil. The image of evil is represented in the novel in the boar's head that the children place on top of a spear; the same, in a state of decomposition, is surrounded by flies.

WILLIAM GOLDING

William Golding's masterpiece was Lord of the Flies, a novel which earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983. However, initially its publication was rejected 21 times, until 1954, when the publishing house "Faber & Faber" ( the same as Eliot) printed the first edition. Original title: "Stranger from Within"> Eliot advised Golding to change it, because it was too clear and simple, different from the story he was dealing with, something that could attract the reader's attention. This title comes from a literal translation of Beelzebub, i.e. the devil or an important demon. The novel became a hit when it was made into a movie a few years later in the 1960s.
