I think, as the facilitator, we have the time and opportunity to read many people's posts - so we might see natural connections between people that we could note. That way it helps speed up the connection time.

Having a schedule by which to upload new content, answer questions, pose questions and engage all learners. From a participant stand point, I have always appreciated the facilitator answering my questions because I feel like my work is valued, my opinion counts, and I am making a difference within the group as well as my own personal growth.

That means staying aware of questions, when someone gets quiet, looking for struggles or disengagement--just like we would when facilitating a face-to-face training.

Keep the details participants share with you in mind as you respond to their posts and questions. Honestly, a benefit of facilitating virtually is that we can keep an actual notebook with little reminders about the details each participant shares with us. I used to do this with my online school students and it was a great help! I do better with details when I see a person face-to-face, and the notes help me remember details and what each person's needs/preferences are as I facilitate learning.

Participants need to feel validated in the work they are doing, so in the F2F environment I would it could be something non-verbal to validate a persons thoughts or ideas like a smile or a head nod, making sure people's posts and comments are validated and heard are essential to making people want to come back.
