Before we watched Joe Biden's inauguration, I didn't know what an inauguration was or why they did it as I was about 12 the last time we swore a president into office. I now understand that it is key and it Biden's speech needed to be heard. Same goes for Angela Gorman's poem, The Hill We Climb. Gorman's poem was dedicated to her childhood and troubles as a young black women in America. Her poem taught me that even if we have a million obstacles to get through, we can make it if we just push along.

I think this lesson was very important in helping me understand the Latino/Chicano culture because Biden's inauguration was like a stretching hand who was there to help migrants from everywhere after the Trump administration worked hard to rid the States of as many immigrants as possible in horrible and inhumane ways. In addition to this, Amanda Gorman spoke to many in her poem not only to the black community but to all people of color.

The 13th documentary allowed be to better understand discrimination and how it personally affects people's lives. The focus around Black History Month was not to be taken lightly and was, in my opinion, a great topic to cover as it taught me different perspectives and how the justice system serves more than it protects. Aside from this, the analyzing of Donald Glover's song, This is America, was a great way to see how America hides away many impurities and acts of hatred against people of color in order to preserve its image.

Before reading the book, The Devil's Highway, I didn't know that many migrants crossed through such a huge and deadly desert. I knew they walked for hours but The Devil's Highway created such an imagery that allowed be to see more clearly the tragedies that many go through for the chance of a better life. I now know so much more about the desert that kills for fun, the sun who bakes people out of boredom, and the guias who kill others because of greed. I now know some of the people who received justice and were lured to their deaths.

From this assignment, I learned that communities could write to Migrant kids who were separated from their families at the border. Reading from the immigrant experiences like the photo essay we looked at also helped me learn that many women carry their children for miles and miles and risk their lives to save their lives. The boat wreck in San Diego that we looked at helped me learn that some people travel by boat. That is something that I did not know at all and was very surprising to me.

They were important and taught me many things that I never would have thought of. I mostly believed that the detained kids would be cut off from any contact with anyone outside so it was a little surprising seeing that they were asking communities for letters for the kids and I really liked that.

The Latin American Poetry unit taught me so much about the poets we looked into. I had knowledge about poets such as Pablo Neruda and Jose Marti but I had no idea that Neruda was very intertwined with the women he loved. I learned that he left his wife for another woman and then left that women for her niece. While I loved his works, I think that disturbed me a little.
