I think that S.E. Hinton was trying to refer to how when someone is in the moment they don't think about anything else. I think that this scene shows how Ponyboy can be strong and his morals are important to him. One thing about the book is how the characters feel like they could be in the real world, I think this is due to S.E. Even though he felt doubt, as Ponyboy noticed when Johnny said "I got a good chance of bein' let off easy" and knew that he was desperate, Johnny was uncharacteristically brave. I think he felt surprised because it was rare for a Soc to help out a Greaser. I think Cherry decided to help because of her conversations with Ponyboy.
