I do agree with Ratliff, to an extent, that music does necessarily have emotion but simply mimics emotion through the "motion" of the music. This may be true when pertaining to music but the people who compose music use these strategies to evoke emotion within everyone who listens to music so no matter which position you take on this subject, the outcome is the same. Music does cause emotions within humans but its not necessarily rooted in the music. The emotion one can receive through music is merely something inside their heads. The style of the music that you listen to can trigger feelings within you allowing for emotion to be transmitted from the music into you. In the song Julia, by John Lennon, transmission is a very apparent strategy used in this song. The emotion in this song is transmitted through the words and how he says them rather than through the style of the music.
