Hannah meg Williamson
Teleri Simons
Chloe Harrison
Ashlea Dilling

The choice behind picking this four dancer and over all going for four dancers in total for my piece was after watching them in the audition and also within class working with them and working how they move and seeing their ways. I decided on going with the four of them as I thought they all danced similar in some way but very different in other ways and as my approach was a dynamic approach I thought all of them could really compliment one another as they all were yet very different dancers in the way they moved. they all had the understanding of the different dynamic movement of sustained and sharp which after noticing I just knew from there would really workweek with all four as they all brought something different to the table which would men I would be setting myself a challenge which would make an interesting piece to watch.

Rehearsals....

I had a discussion with my dancers on what question I was doing with was sleep. With my dancer I made a phrase using all different ways of sleeping. With each movement representing yawning, falling to sleep and catching yourself from sleeping. From working on this phrase I decided I would stick to one main stage of sleep which would be the first stage you falling to sleep. for the first rehearsal I created a phrase using movement that represented yawning falling asleep, catching yourself from falling a sleep to show the use of sleep.
the following rehearsal we added on and added moments of cannon and contact towards the end of what I named phrase one.

The choice of my music was Oafer Arnalds - Brotsjor after listening to this music for the first time I new this was what I wanted I like the piece of music as its powerful within its approach it has a light soft beginning which would show the lightest stage of falling to sleep. Then the music would build up with many loud and sharp noises which would show jitters which is usually toward the beginning of sleeping. The music then build up into fast and dynamic speed which showed the struggle as the dancer were showing frustration throughout the movement as the lack of sleep and their exhaustion got too much. when working and creating on my piece with my dancers I also mentioned the music and being on the music through out I also got my dancer to count out loud all the way up to the final showing on stage in front of Craig hour before the show as my piece was very based around the music and it would of made a massive different in the piece if the count or dancers were off at any point.

After given the questions I was most drawn to sleep as I thought there was so much I could do with all the different stages. once we were given the choice I researched and learnt all about each stage of sleep. At first I thought I would make my piece around all the stages as I thought it would be interesting having all different sections and meanings but after making a unison phrase within the first rehearsal with the girls I was really drawn to the first stage which was the falling to sleep stage. Though out all the rehearsal with the girls I always describe what I wanted the piece to be like. I would always help create and show demonstrations. the look I was going for when creating my piece was falling and catch idea where all transitions would be lose and grounded just like your stumbling and can't walk type of walk, I thought this was a good way to shows falling and exhaustion behind the dancers.

My Choreography is influenced by stage one of sleep. The stage of sleep I have selected is the lightest stage where the body is falling in and out of sleep. The piece follows the journeys of four young dancers that all suffer from insomnia causing them struggle to get themselves past the first stage of sleep and the constant struggle of being able fall to sleep. Exploring the idea falling and catching of the body due to exhaustion, the four dancers find themselves assisting one another within their journeys. The structure behind the development of the work is that of a narrative approach. Throughout the piece the most consistent device used is the use of contact behind the dancers, the use of contact represents the support and relationship between the dancers. Another device used within the creation of my piece was unison. Within the dance you see a unison phrase, this represents the teamwork and relationship between all the dancers. In addition to this another device shown within the piece is the use of canon, this performs a knock-on effect of the dancers experiencing the same problem. The spatial patterns at the end of my piece is a line going horizontally. This is a ternary used structure, it is a constant reputation to portray the same idea of falling asleep but staying awake. the same across the stage with an equal amount of distance between each dancer and it travels forward from the back of the stage to the front with a turn and landing on knees with a slow rise up. This represents the falling asleep and resisiting to stay awake.

This is a video from a rehearsal on show week.. this week I had to rehearsal with my dancers. this rehearsal was mainly to clean and perfect my work. Having the opportunity to rehearsal on the stage fro the first time before the show as a brilliant insight on what it will look like. this was also really helpful as I got to space the piece and was good for the dancers to work out their specials paths and how much room they have with one another. this was a very productive rehearsals all my dancers were switch on and engaged so when it came to cleaning and running the piece the dancer give mass of energy and commitment in getting things done for the show on Friday. Another good opportunity having the stage space before hand was that I had the speaker to play my music on which made a big difference as the room is a lot bigger than the studio it made my dancers more aware of the music within in this rehearsal making sure they were all counting and staying in time with each other and the music.
