Every shoe is 100% vegan, all of the packaging used by Vessi is 100% recyclable and the company has engaged in major charitable donations, including donating free pairs of Vessi sneakers to thousands of Canadian front-line nurses when the COVID pandemic first tore through the country.

While the box of shoes mentions how they are vegan and waterproof, the major marketing for their social responsibility is done on their website.

Vessi continually runs charitable projects such as raising money to donate meals to those in need, donating proceeds of sales towards numerous initiatives, and all year long, they fund projects to help improve the city and fight against homelessness.

Vessi shoes can easily be purchased as they are an online store and can be shipped directly to your doorstep, however, if you do not own a credit card or have internet access, it would be very difficult to purchase a pair. Adidas also sells sneakers but do not advertise any of their CSR policies on the packaging.

MarianneStrang: Pela- Biodegradable Phone Cases (Found on Pela’s official website)

What makes biodegradable phone cases socially responsible is that they are entirely plant-based, using starches from sustainably harvested plants such as bamboo and wheat straw. They are free from anything harmful to the environment, and they have built-in antibacterial ingredients that kill 99% of bacteria. They as well can be reused and resold and are more durable so they can be kept out of landfills for longer.

An example of a biodegradable phone case is Pela phone cases which are handmade, plant-based, made from flax shive/ straw fibre (a waste byproduct of the oilseed harvest) and biopolymer, vegan, 100% compostable, and estimated to take anywhere between 6 months to 2 years to fully decompose. This brand also allows consumers to take back its product to help dispose of them if necessary, as well as donating part of their revenue to non-profit organizations such as ocean and land cleanup.

These durable and quality cases have the name of the company “Pela” on the back, bottom center of the case, delivered to a consumer with packaging made out of 100% recycled paperboard.

Something else about the company/ product is that it also holds a screen protection guarantee, so if your screen cracks while wearing Pela’s phone case, they will pay for the repairs, as well promise hassle-free exchange and returns worldwide. These eco- friendly cases have also already removed more than 15, 000 pounds of plastic waste from the waste stream, which is just the beginning for these growing company.

Some barriers to purchasing this product include its high prices for the eco-friendly phone cases, with prices that vary from $29. 95- 49. 95, for just the phone case. With a protector on the front screen the price can vary anywhere between $60 -80, which some consumers have already paid a large amount for their phone, may not like. Another barrier is the high competitor factor, as these cases and the idea can be easily replicated, improved upon, and sold for cheaper elsewhere, making Pela a weaker competitor, allowing for their threat of substitutes to be very high.

Trade-offs a consumer could make are ones geared towards cheaper more trendy cases such as Incipio Organicore Cases, where the lowest price is $24.99 with more colors and styles for a consumer to choose from. Another similar not-so- CSR product that Pela can be compared to is Nimble. Although Nimble phone case is the world's only iPhone case made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, with plastic-free packaging and 5% of its profit is donated to protecting the World’s Oceans and Marine life, it is not plant-based and is more expensive with its lowest price being $44. 95.

To be corporate socially responsible is to conduct ethical actions for different use which includes business and personal purpose. The goal to be socially responsible is to minimize harmful consequences to the society caused by the productions in all kinds of operation; components include environment, health and safety, corporate governance, business ethics, employment equity, supply chain / distribution channel, and customer. Actions that promote CSR include using recycled materials for production, employing less waste-emission policy, regulating corporation policy ethically, and be responsible to consumers.
On the backpack, it is printed “the lining is made of 100% of recycled plastic bottles. In additional, on Matt and Nat’s official website it’s mentioned that the products of Vegan backpack series are made of vegan materials, where no leather nor any animal-based material is used for the design. This information is also provided along with the label attached to the Vegan backpack series products.
PU (polyurethane) is a biodegradable material Matt and Nat uses, its less harmful to the planet. They are currently doing research and development on using fruits skin fibers.
Some barriers are:
1) Limited product variety: The invention is still on the early stage where the resource of development is limited.
2) Slow production (Longer time required for research and development): In order to be more mature on the stage of production, more investment on R&D is needed.
3) High substitution competition: There are a lot of choices from other not-so-CSR brands available where consumers have more style options to choose from.

- Clara Chan

1. What makes "socially responsible"?
This product is sustainable and organic. It has a low environmental impact as it also has a plastic free product range, the product is aluminium free and are cruelty free. Therefore, it has no effect on animals and environment. The raw material used in the production is organic and has no negative effect on the users. The corporate is doing its bit by also donating 1% of its plastic free sales.

2. How is this signalled on the packaging?
The packaging is easy, clean, and mess free. They also offer products in plastic- free containers which is also good for the environment. The packaging is simple, basic and uses minimal colours so that the focus can be on the product itself and not the packaging.

3. What else do you know about the company/product CSR policies?
As mentioned before, the company/product is naturally derived and uses products that don’t harm its customers. They also donate a percentage of its sales. Lastly, they also provide the list of all its ingredients at the bac so that people know what they are using.

4. What are the barriers to purchasing this product, if any? Any trade-offs a consumer would make? Compare your product to a similar not-so-CSR product.
A barrier or trade- off for buying this product can be the facts that it is considerably expensive if compared to Dove or Nivea that sell similar stick deodorants. Another thing could be the packaging, as native products have very minimalistic approach while other brands use very colourful and attractive packaging so attract customers.

- Puneet Dullat

Patagonia Long Sleeve P-6 Logo Responsibili-Tee®

1. For a product to be socially responsible, it must demonstrate that it operates in an ethical manner that minimizes its impact on the environment, uses sustainable practices, and treats their workers in a humane way.
2. When you go to shopping on Patagonia's online store, you will find that for almost all their products, they will have a dedicated section talking about the product and how it was made, where it came from, and what makes the product socially responsible. In the case of the Long Sleeve P-6 Logo Responsibili-Tee®, they provide information about how the t-shirt was made partly with plastic bottles and cotton scrap, which led to decreased water usage and CO2 emissions. They also have a section on the webpage stating where exactly the t-shirt was made and how it is fair trade certified.
3. Patagonia as a company is very known for the CSR practices and going beyond what other companies provide. Patagonia has several third-party certifications like the bluesign and Fair Trade. Bluesign is an organization that evaluates a companies supply chain and ensures that the products being made are safe for the environment, workers, and customers. The Fair Trade Certification is given to companies who have shown their commitment to improving the lives of many factory workers across the world.
4. The major barrier for this product and other Patagonia products is the price tag. Patagonia is known to charge a premium for their products , where a simple hoodie can retails for up to $100. This is probably more than what an average consumer would spend on a hoodie, but customers area paying for more than just the hoodie. They are paying for a high-quality product that is made by a reputable company that they can support their vision. If we were to compare the Patagonia Long Sleeve P-6 Logo Responsibili-Tee® that retails for $55 to a $15 H&M t-shirt, the H&M shirt is most likely of very poor quality that wont last more than a few years of wear. Also, H&M have typically never been transparent on the sourcing of their products and they do not openly disclose that type of information to their customers.

Sean Mizukoshi

1. What makes "socially responsible"? (Ideas: sustainable, local, organic, free range, low environmental impact, recycled, corporate reputation ...)

MAC is incredibly diverse in their goal of impacting their surrounding environment and trying to lessen their environmental impact. MAC has various charitable programs, such as MAC Viva glam, which supports the MAC aids funds through the purchase of the Viva Glam lipsticks (100% of the proceeds are donated). MAC is the pioneer of the beauty industry, thus creating waves in the industry when the brand started its journey of not testing on animals (except where it is mandated). The program that has the greatest impact on the environment would be the “Back to MAC” program. Once a customer brings in six empty containers of anything that is glass or plastic, the customer can have a free lipstick, eyeshadow or lipgloss. The empty containers are then sorted and recycled to use in future MAC packaging.

2. How is this signalled on the packaging?

This is signaled through a “Back 2 MAC” imprint once you open up the product. This will let the customer know that the product they purchased are allowed to be traded in for a free product.

The Viva Glam lipsticks come in special red packaging and are labeled all over the packaging. MAC also hold special campaigns to promote the Viva Glam lipsticks.

3. What else do you know about the company/product CSR policies (brief Google search)?

The company really tries to implement a social responsibility concept from the bottom up. The workers get trained constantly with the slogan “All ages, all races and all genders”. Which highly impacts the corporate reputation because the cosmetic industry has really struggled with inclusivity. Additionally, MAC sources its folding cartons from a leading sustainable paper mill to further their efforts in protecting their environments.

4. What are the barriers to purchasing this product, if any? Any trade offs a consumer would make? Compare your product to a similar not-so-CSR product ...

Not all products are “recyclable” but all other products get incinerated to not end up in a landfill. The products are in the more expensive range within the beauty industry. MAC stands above most because of their efforts and programs to achieve social responsibility. Many other brands do not have these initiatives. One big impact MAC is lacking is “clean ingredients”, brands like “Milk Makeup” or “Kosas” where they can have the “Clean product “label.

-Perryn Thiessen

1. For Lush, they use 100% post-consumer plastics while packing their pots or bottles. Their plastic bottles can be recycled through the city’s recycling program. A socially responsible company should aim to make sure that their packaging goes to the recycle bins instead of the garbage bins, which would create less burden on our landfills.
2. Lush says on its packaging that if customers can return five clear containers to any branch, they can get a free mask for free. This encourages customers to return the containers to the store. Also, it says 100% recyclable plastic on its packaging to let customers know they can safely put the empty bottle in a recyclable bin.
3. Also, Lush made their clear bottles thinner by 10% to reduce plastic usage. In 2016, this action saved almost 13,500 pounds of plastic.
4. In my opinion, it is a little bit expensive than other brands because of the organic ingredients they use in their products which might not be a good thing for them as customers can choose to buy skincare or haircare products from other inexpensive brands.

1. As climate change is a serious issue that our society is facing, products produced in environmentally conscious ways are socially responsible. The Kalamazoo beard and face wash from Lush is entirely vegan, which is very good for the environment. Vegan products are especially good for the environment as they require less water to produce since their ingredients don’t need to consume plants. The packaging of the product is socially responsible as well. The black pot, which is made of recycled material that the product comes in, can be brought back to any Lush location, and the company will recycle it again.

2. There is a “V” in a circle on the front of the product packaging to signal to the consumer that the product is vegan.

3. Lush is very well known for its corporate social responsibility. The brand's backbone is its commitment to ending animal testing and promise that all of its products are cruelty-free. They have a whole section of their website dedicated to impact and activism. They consider the environment at every stage of production and hold themselves to a very high standard. The brand is not a bystander when it comes to social justice; they have pages on their website dedicated to issues from saving the grizzly bears to Black Lives Matter.

4. The primary barrier to entry would be their prices. Beard and Face washes from other brands can cost around $8 for 100ml, while the Lush Kalamazoo Beard and Face Wash is nearly $13. Accessibility is also a barrier; while the consumer can purchase the product online, shipping costs add to the total cost, which, in turn, raises the monetary barrier.
- Daniel Sadaghianian

Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 by Fenty Skin

1. Fenty Skin is one of the three main companies created by a famous singer/actress Rihanna, which target people of all shapes, sizes, and colour. The brand encourages the inclusivity of men and women all over the world to help all of their customers to feel confident within their own skin. When it comes to this product in particular it is gluten-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and comes in recyclable packaging. Apart from that people of colour tend to struggle a lot when it comes to finding a sunscreen that would not leave a white cast over their faces, which tends to create a solid problem for the daily users of those creams. However, this product was created for people of all skin tones as it appears transparent once of the packaging. It is suitable for every single skin shade out their, so that nobody is excluded.

2. The packaging itself is reusable, as people are now able to buy the refills and not waste as much plastic with each and every one of their purchases. This gives and opportunity for people all over the world to do better for our planet, while still using the products they are so used to. Apart from that, it states on the packaging that this product is invisible and that the packaging itself is reusable.

3. Fenti Skin focuses on making skincare easy and fun for everybody, men and women. It starts with the packaging of their products and finishes with their ingredients. Overall this business style helps them to educate people all over the world, and give people an opportunity to take care of themselves, while also taking care of the planet.

4. The only barrier to purchasing this product is its price, as compared to many other products in the same category it is located in a higher end of it. However, there are not as many options in the drugstore, that would compare even ingredients wise, let alone the social responsibility level of a company it is produced by. One of the similar products to Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 PA+++ by Supergoop. Both of this products are promoting to be invisible and in a higher end spectrum, however the Fenti Skin product is reusable and the Supergoop one is not, which means it has a lower social responsibility level.

Tru Earth’s Eco Strips Laundry Detergent (Made in Canada)

Where can I buy it?

These eco-strips are available in most supermarkets and smaller retail stores. In Vancouver, they can be found at Costco, Strong’s Market, Hewer Home Hardware, Greens Organic and Natural Market, Shaughnessy Pharmacy, and several other stores. They are also available online on Amazon, Well.ca and Tru Earth’s website where they provide free shipping.

1. What makes it "socially responsible"?

Tru Earth’s detergent eco-strips are an eco-friendly alternative to generic detergents available in stores. Each eco-strip contains ultra-concentrated and pre-measured detergent powder which easily dissolves in hot or cold water. It claims to keep 700,000 plastic jugs out of the landfill each year.

2. How is this signaled on the packaging?

Their logo and brand name “Tru Earth” is on the front of its packaging followed by the product name: eco-strips. The name itself suggests that the brand is eco-friendly. They have an eco-symbol on the bottom left corner. Additionally, they have a ‘biodegradable and hypoallergenic stamp on the bottom right corner that confirms the claims.

The back side of the packaging, on the top left corner says “Clean Green Simple” which also suggests that the contents are green. Under that, they make claims of being phosphate-free, biodegradable, hypoallergenic and 1,4-dioxane free. There is also a recycling symbol that suggests that the packaging itself is recyclable.

3. What else do you know about the company/product CSR policies?

Their eco-strips are certified paraben-free, chlorine bleach free, dye-free, and phosphate-free. Their strips are free of 1,4-dioxane, as certified by independent lab tests, and hypoallergenic as certified by independent dermatologists. Their products are biodegradable in accordance with OECD 310D. They are also vegan and cruelty-free, as are their suppliers. Tru Earth also has several other environmentally friendly products listed on their website. They are so confident in their company and its products that they advertise a 100% money back guarantee on all items. The packaging for these strips is much smaller than typical detergents. Therefore, there is 94% less pollution caused by transportation as compared to generic products.

4. What are the barriers to purchasing this product, if any? Any tradeoffs a consumer would make? Compare your product to a similar not-so-CSR product.

This product is readily and conveniently available both online and in stores. They also provide free shipping, which means there are no added costs. However, the product itself is not inexpensive. For reference, a 3.78L jerrycan of ‘Tide Simply Clean and Fresh’ costs $11.59 on average and lasts for up to 89 loads. That means each load costs approximately $0.13 cents. Whereas the Tru Earth eco-strips cost $35.95 for only 64 loads which makes the cost $0.56/load. This makes the eco-strips nearly 5 times more expensive than regular detergent. This could be a significant expense depending on the income, size, and usage of a family/individual.

                                      - Pouru Patell

This cling wrap is made from a combination of different biopolymers that create the feel and look of traditional plastic but can be fully composted within 24 weeks in a home composting environment. This makes it an eco-friendly alternative to regular plastic cling wrap and can help cut down on every household’s environmental footprint. In a world where non-reusable plastics are ravaging the environment any opportunity that can help reduce it is a welcoming sight.

2. How is this signaled on the packaging

The packaging for Compostic cling wrap stands out among other cling wraps with large writing stating that it is “100% Compostable”. Anyone looking to cut down on their use of traditional plastics will immediately be drawn to this key wording on the packaging. The packaging also tells the consumer that this cling wrap will break down quicker than the average orange peel, which gives the consumer a good comparison of how quickly the cling wrap breaks down.

3. What else do you know about the company/product CSR policies.

Compostic is a relatively newly formed company, founded and operated in New Zealand. They are pushing the message that their products are completely certified compostable which means they must fully break down within 12-24 weeks and leave behind no harmful residues or toxins.

4. What are the barriers to purchasing this product, if any? Any tradeoffs a consumer would make? Compare your product to a similar not-so-CSR product ...

The biggest barrier of purchasing this product would have to be the price. Conventional plastic cling wrap goes for around $5 for 150 meters of product, whereas Compostic Compostable Cling Wrap is sold for $15 for roughly the same amount. This could be a deterrent for consumers who are looking to save money but can be a niche product for people who are very environmentally conscious and are looking to cut down on their plastic usage.

- Justin Vogt

1. The shoes are vegan, made with repurposed material and printed on with plant based ink. It is one of Nike's lowest carbon footprint shoe ever released. The midsole material is made out of recycled shoe midsoles that have been pulverized and re-molded.
2. The packaging/shoe box has two elements to show its sustainability. The first is that the shoe box has "Nike Trash Reformed" and "Move to Zero Emissions" printed on the graphics with the plant based ink. The second is the shipping method of using a single box. Typically Nike would ship a shoe with a second box protecting the actual shoe box, but with this shoe the goal is to reduce waste.
3. Nike's goal with this type of shoe is to use sustainable materials and innovate through zero-waste manufacturing. Nike has a "Move to Zero" initiative. Nike's goals for CSR are as follows: lower emissions across their key operations, shrink their product carbon footprint, accelerate diversity and inclusion across their teams, enable kids to have access to play and sport, redefine what responsible leadership looks like, and create five year progress targets.
4. The availability of the space hippie is one barrier to purchasing as well as the condition of the shoe upon delivery or purchase is not guaranteed. The trade off is the purpose built function of the shoe. The space hippie does not have total product quality control assurance and does not have access to certain technology that makes a Nike shoe applicable for sport. An example of this is comparing Nike's Air Zoom Alphafly, their sub-two hour marathon shoe through use of carbon fiber plates, to the space hippie, which features none of the performance enhancing technology the Alphafly features. This makes the Space Hippie not applicable for sport in comparison.

Benedict Ramsbottom
