"Fiction was useful as a reminder of the truths under the surface of what we
argue about every day and was a way of seeing and hearing the voices, the multitudes
of this country." reading literature can introduce the reader into a life that we would not be able to experience otherwise. The literature puts in the shoes of someone else so that we may experience it too.

Eveline is an example of how everyday we struggle to venture on to something new because of we let fear and the past control our decisions more than our ambitions sometimes. Eveline wanted to leave her small town and controlling father for something exciting and new. Many people go through this everyday, the desire to explore and try something new but too scared to leave. From an outside perspective many readers would highly suggest leaving but as we see in the short story she stays.

A&P explores the desire for change in lifestyle. Just as Eveline wanted to leave to find something different so did Sammy. Sammy's predicament leads him to leave his job after seeing three girls that walked in and gave the place something that he felt was fresher than the apples in the produce section. He quits his job by the end of the story but is extremely nervous and feels that he has left his job empty handed. Many people have the feeling of now what after making a risky move but it the situation may not be as bad what it seems. From the readers point of view we can tell that him quitting a supermarket job isn't a big deal because he could just as easily get a new job. I think the book let's us look back into our adolescence and we felt and being able to relate to the younger generation in some situations.

Through out the book we see what it is like from a younger girls point of view growing up in a rough neighborhood. We see her go through the struggle of living in a house she is embarrassed to live in along with sexual assault from a young age into her teenage years. From the book we take a look into the world from a younger girls eyes and what it is like to be in her shoes. From a my perspective it shines a whole new light on things that go on in today's life for women and I'm a bit more conscious as to what women may experience throughout their entire life.

This short story revolves around the Idea of keeping culture that has come from the roots of African-Americans and also the idea of going back to Africa's culture which is where many of the ancestry for blacks come from. Although some people (like the mother) do not feel as connected with it because she is connected with her lineage in America. Although Dee wants to get back into her heritage as she wears more traditional African Clothing. What can be taken away from this is that both pasts can be acknowledged as just as important as the other. each play a role in who we are and what we represent today in America.

In A Pair of Tickers Mei is conflicted with her heritage. Her family is from China but she does not have as Strong as a connection to the country as much as her family does and sometimes feels disconnected because of it. This can actually be connected with the D.A.C.A. Program as many of them may have originated from a different country they do not have the connection to their families home as they do here. Their place of origin for them would not be considered their home because they have spent their whole life growing up here. And to kick them out would practically just leave them homeless.

The passage is dives into the mind of a young women who has to follow a strict way of living and doing things because that is what a women is supposed to do. It is a constant flow of do's and do not's with some self shaming sprinkled in. This puts us in the shoes of women who feel as if they have to live life a certain way in order to be considered a clean nice young women, which comes off as stressful when going through it due to the lack of breaks in the passage. It's as if she is not allowed to take a break and even if everything is done correctly would someone still believe she isn't this ideal image that she is trying so hard to be? Although women should never have to feel this way

I believe It is a look into how people of color felt in earlier America. Even though many people were discriminated against in their own country the people stayed and fought for themselves rather than going to a country that would accept them as they are.

In this short story we read about a young boy who goes through life with his father who is abusive and is infamous for barn burning. The relationship between the two is not healthy as the father (Abner) asks Sartoris to lie for him in court (and this may not be the first instance of this happening) and he hits him. We can see into the young boys life that he is scared of his father and is too scared to leave until it seems like the only thing he can do and when he does we recognize that he may have to struggle on his own considering he hasn't reached his teenage years as of yet.
