         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Carbon-</strong> additional CO2 added to the atmosphere: tree clearing, burning of fossil fuels, warms atmosphere. Link between photosynthesis in producers and respiration in producers, consumers, and decomposes. <br><strong>Nitrogen- </strong>(N) lighting, bacteria, and cyanobacteria. Additional NO &amp; N2O in atmosphere from burning fossil fuels causes acid rain. N2O to atmosphere from bacteria acting on fertilizers and manure. Destruction of forest, grasslands, and wetlands. Add excess nitrates to bodies of water. Remove nitrogen from topsoil. <br><strong>Phosphorus-</strong>the limiting factor for plant growth. Impact of human activities: clearing forests, removing large amounts of phosphate from the earth to make fertilizers, Erosion leaches phosphate into streams. <strong><br>Sulfur-</strong> is found in organisms, ocean sediments, soil, rocks, and fossil fuels. Human activities affect the sulfur cycle: burn sulfur-containing coal and oil, refine sulfur-containing petroleum, convert sulfur-containing metallic mineral ores.<strong><br>Water Cycles- </strong>natural renewal of water quality: evaporation, precipitation, transpiration. Alteration by humans: withdrawal of large amounts of freshwater at rates faster than nature can replace it, clearing vegetation, increased flooding when wetlands are drained<strong><br>Conservation of matter- </strong>Matter cannot be created nor destroyed.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Ecosystem Structure </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Biological populations- </strong>Concern with the growth and regulation of population, size, genetics, demographics, and life history evolution and interactions among species. <strong><br>Ecological niches- </strong>a species' way of life or its functional role in a community. Everything that affects its survival and reproduction is part of that niche. <strong><br>Species interactions- </strong>within ecological webs include four main types of two-way interactions: mutualism, commensalism, competition, and predation<strong><br>Keystone species- </strong>have a larger effect on maintaining balance within an ecosystems.<strong> <br>Species diversity- </strong>is the number of different species that are represented in a given community. Defined as the number of species and abundance of each species that live in a particular location.<strong><br>Major terrestrial- </strong>tundra, rainforest, savanna, taiga, grassland, and forest. <strong><br>Aquatic biomes- </strong>is definitely the largest biome out there. Water covers nearly 75 percent of the earth's surface, in the form of oceans, lakes, rivers, etc. They can be separated into 2 categories: freshwater regions and saltwater regions. <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Energy Flow</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Photosynthesis-</strong>the process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in green plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.<strong><br>Cell respiration- </strong>cells release energy from the chemical bonds of food molecules and provide that energy for the essential processes of life. <strong><br>Food Webs &amp; trophic levels- </strong>helps us understand how eaters, the eaten, and the decomposed are interconnected in an ecosystems. Energy flow in a food web decreases at each succeeding organism in a chain or web.<strong><br>Ecological pyramids- </strong>a graphic representation of the relationship between organisms at various trophic levels in a food chain. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Ecosystem Diversity</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Biodiversity- </strong>the variety of species, genes, ecosystems, and ecosystems processes. <strong><br>Natural Selection- </strong>individuals with certain traits are more likely to survive and reproduce under a certain set of environmental conditions. 2nd step in biological evolution. <strong><br>Evolution- </strong>how earth's life changes over time through changes in the genetic characteristics of populations. The change in population's genetic makeup over time. Forces adaptations to changes in environmental conditions in a population.<strong><br>Ecosystem services-</strong> are the many and varied benefits that humans freely gain from the natural environment and from the properly function ecosystems. (grassland and forest ecosystems)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Climate shifts- </strong>A long term change in the earths climate especially a change due to an increase in the average atmospheric temperature. <strong><br>Species movement- </strong>as the world's climate changes, many species are being forced out of their old habitats. While some species are able to migrate to cooler territory, those in the tropics may have no where else to go.<strong><br>Ecological succession- </strong>the process if change in the species structure of an eco-community over time. </div>]]></description>
