The cells inside of the leaves are made up of small structures known as chloroplasts. The chloroplasts is filled chlorophyll and this is what gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll then takes in the suns energy and splits the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Oxygen is released into the atmosphere.
