A technique used on the film "The Shawshank Redemption", directed by Frank Darabont is dialogue. This is important to the film as it is used throughout the film to display that lack of hope is a weakness. An important moment in the film where dialogue is used is when Red says to Andy "I played a mean harmonica when I was a young man, lost interest in it though, made no sense in here". This made it look like When Andy was younger, he lost hope to play the harmonica well so now when he gets one he can not play it. If you ever give up on hope, let it destroy you, it can lead to a lot of despair and can turn your life around. An example of this in the movie is when

Frank Darabont uses costumes to help portray the idea of loss of identity, he does this by using the same outfits for the prisoners. Everyone of them is dressed head to toe in grey, symbolizing their dull lives within Shawshank. Their only way of self expression is their identification numbers, and even these are chosen for them. This creates a sense of hopelessness for the prisoners as they are being treated like they aren't human but are lower than them.

Another technique that helps develop the idea that Andy Dufresne is a mysterious man is the use of soundtrack in the opening scene of ShawShank. This is created by the words "If I didn't careeee" this makes the audience intrigued.Because they wonder what Andy is doing in the car late at night.Later on in the film we see the use of soundtrack when Andy has locked himself in the warden's office
