The first women's rights convention in the United States was held in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. This event marked the beginning of a long struggle for suffrage and other rights. The fight for women's rights continues today, with ongoing struggles for equality and justice in various parts of the world.

Because of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling taking away the constitutional right to abortion, a ruling in which all three Trump appointed justices voted with the majority, the U.S. now is experiencing a public health crisis. Since the ruling, 17 states have banned abortion entirely or severely restricted it, leaving millions without care, especially in the South and Midwest. Obstetricians are fleeing those states since they can’t properly care for their patients, even those women facing life-threatening pregnancy complications. Maternal and infant deaths have increased since pregnant people are being forced to carry to term pregnancies with no chance of survival, at risk to their own health, fertility and lives. These factors set back women's rights years, some states not even allowing abortions when its needed or will kill the women who are pregnant.

The women's suffrage movement was a long struggle to secure the right to vote for women in the United States. It involved various strategies, including education, lobbying, and even militant action, and spanned several generations of activists. The movement culminated in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, granting women the right to vote. The movement's roots can be traced back to the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, a landmark event that highlighted the issue of women's rights, including suffrage. The women's voting rights movement faced several setbacks, including opposition from anti-suffragists, internal disagreements within the movement, and the exclusion of women of color from full enfranchisement even after the 19th Amendment. Men were also mostly against the movement, fearing the loss of traditional gender roles if women were allowed to vote. During the protests police brutality and abuse in the jails these women were held in was severe and not necessary. Even though we now have the 19th Amendment many people want to take that away still. Trump and his team are right now trying to overwrite some laws to make it harder for certain groups, women, African Americans, ect to vote, setting us back a decade.

The gender wage gap persists, with women in the US earning approximately 83 cents for every dollar earned by men. This gap exists across all occupations and all levels of work, according to the Institute for Women's Policy Research. While there has been some improvement, the gap is still significant, with women losing an estimated $400,000 over their careers due to it. Women may experience pay cuts and reduced career opportunities after having children. Studies suggest that women may face bias in hiring, promotion, and salary negotiations, women still being discriminated against in the workplace just for being women.

The stigma surrounding women's menstrual cycles refers to the negative social and cultural perceptions, beliefs, and practices that treat menstruation as something dirty, shameful, or impure. This stigma has existed for a long time and takes various forms, affecting different aspects of women's lives. In some cultures, menstruation is seen as a reason to exclude women from certain activities, spaces, or even social interactions. This can include religious restrictions or being prohibited from participating in cooking or other household tasks. Insufficient or inaccurate education about menstruation contributes to misconceptions and reinforces stigma, leaving many girls and women unprepared for their first period and potentially unable to manage their menstrual health effectively and makes men feel disgusted and not understand menstrual cycles. There are also problems with the products for menstruation, or more like the prices for them. The prices for these products are way too high for something that should be free to women anyway as we go through it every month. If men had to get periods the products would be free and they would get the whole week off from doing anything.

While 80-85% of rape victims know their perpetrator, many cases are under reported due to shame, fear, or a belief that no one will help, under reported cases mean the actual prevalence of sexual assault may be higher than reported statistics. Over half of women have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. Nationwide, 81% of women report experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime.

Misogyny and Sexism

Misogyny is a way of thinking that upholds the primary status of men and a sense of male entitlement, while subordinating women and limiting their power and freedom. It's more than just individual hostility; it's a social system or environment where women face hostility and hatred because they are women in a world shaped by patriarchy. Misogyny perpetuates the idea that women are inferior, leading to their lower social status and justifying discrimination in various areas of life, including unequal pay and limited career advancement. Being exposed to misogynistic attitudes and behaviors can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and feelings of worthlessness in women. Studies show a link between experiencing gender discrimination and increased risk of mental health conditions. Women may internalize misogynistic beliefs and attitudes, leading to self-doubt, minimizing the value of women (including themselves), and mistrusting other women. Misogyny is a deeply ingrained prejudice that, through its various forms, harms women on individual, interpersonal, and societal levels, limiting their opportunities, undermining their well-being, and perpetuating inequality.

Blaming Women because of what happened to them (Sexual, Physical, Emotional Violence)

This happens often when a women is hurt physically, sexually or emotionally where people (mostly men) blame the woman who survived, victim blaming them. Victim blaming, especially with women, is when a person who has experienced harm, often sexual violence, is held partially or entirely responsible for what happened to them. This attitude is frequently rooted in a larger issue known as "rape culture" which downplays the severity of sexual violence and normalizes behaviors and beliefs that excuse or defend it. Common forms of victim blaming include questioning a woman's clothing, saying things like, "She was asking for it", implying that her actions or choices led to the assault, "Why didn't she fight back?", or suggesting she shouldn't have been in a particular situation, "She shouldn't have gone there". In essence, blaming women for the violence they experience is a product of harmful societal beliefs and attitudes that perpetuate the cycle of violence and re-victimize survivors.

Abigail Williams and Tituba in The Crucible are scapegoated and punished, mirroring the sexist beliefs common in Puritan society and society as a whole, this still happening today. The Scarlet letter shows inequality to women, getting more punishment then men when they do the same thing, in this case adultery. This ties back to women being blamed for things or getting blamed and punished more than men for the same actions, showing sexism.

Reproductive health advocates are sounding the alarm over the case of a pregnant woman in Georgia who was declared brain dead months ago but must now stay on life support, according to her family, because of the state’s strict abortion ban law. Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old nurse from the metro Atlanta area, experienced a medical emergency in February that involved blood clots in her brain. Smith, who was about nine weeks pregnant at the time, was declared legally dead. staff at Emory University’s network of hospitals told her they cannot remove the devices that are helping Smith to breathe because of the state’s six-week abortion ban. The staff said they are legally required to keep Smith breathing until the fetus reaches viability. Even after all of this the fetus in Adriana has fluid in its brain which could mean the fetus will be born stillborn, blind, deaf or with a cognitive disorder, all because they want to keep a brain dead woman breathing for a fetus that hasn't even been born. Have you ever watched the Handmaidens Tale? Its a show and Novel about how women have lost all freedoms and their sole purpose is to serve man and give birth, showing just how deep rooted misogyny is into society and showing what could happen to women if the wrong people get into power. Season 3 Episode 9 is exactly what happened to Adriana, a women kept breathing even though their brain dead for a fetus. We are evolving backwards thanks to the people in power.

Victim Blaming Women/ Blaming Women for Everything

Blaming women for various issues (mostly in society) is a complex and harmful thing that happens daily with deep historical and cultural roots. Historically, entrenched patriarchal systems have positioned women as the "other" and led to their being blamed for societal problems and as victims of violence. Gender roles and stereotypes assign specific tasks and responsibilities to men and women based on their gender rather than individual capabilities, often leading to blame when these roles are perceived to be unmet. Victim blaming is perpetuated through media and everyday discourse. News headlines may focus on a victim's behavior rather than the perpetrator's actions, and social media comments can blame victims for their own experiences. Women are often blamed for the violence they experience, such as sexual assault, with justifications ranging from their clothing or behavior to staying in abusive relationships. Women may be blamed for not adequately fulfilling traditionally feminine roles like housekeeping and childcare, even when juggling multiple responsibilities. Historically, women were blamed for infertility, with theories suggesting psychological causes within the woman even though in most cases its actually the mans fault due to their sperm. Feminism is sometimes blamed for societal problems like the "men loneliness epidemic" experienced by some men, rather than recognizing broader societal developments.
