L&N Railroad

Chartered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1850, the road grew into one of the great success stories of American business. Operating under one name continuously for 132 years, it survived civil war and economic depression and several waves of social and technological change. Under Milton H. Smith, president of the company for 30 years, the L&N grew from a road with less than three hundred miles (480 km) of track to a 6,000-mile (9,700 km) system serving fourteen states. As one of the premier Southern railroads, the L&N extended its reach far beyond its namesake cities, stretching to St. Louis, Memphis, Atlanta, and New Orleans. The railroad was economically strong throughout its lifetime, operating freight and passenger trains in a manner that earned it the nickname, "The Old Reliable."

Whilst pointing out the special hiding spot in which she had found some gum before, she notices something else has been placed inside. It’s a velvet box with some old Indian-heads. Jem and Scout debate on who could be stashing these items away and what they should do with them; they ultimately decide Jem will keep the Indian-heads in his trunk because they are evidently valuable to somebody.

The Great Depression hit the US hard in the 1930s, and Alabama was no exception. However, Governor Bibb Graves and lawmakers used this crisis to enact important education reforms in the state. They passed laws that gave free textbooks to younger students, ensured schools had enough funds for a seven-month year, and prevented local school boards from spending more money than they had. These changes had a lasting impact on education in Alabama.

On page 43, it is described that the so-called Dewey Decimal System became school-wide by the end of the year. There were many changes to reform the education system. Dewey’s Theory that he has created changes the way education is taught forever. John Dewey provides America with the first big step at educational reform. John Dewey was a strong progressive educational reform. He believed that education should be based on the principle of learning through doing. Learning through doing inspired teachers to not just teach, but to interact with the children. This method helped the students to learn much more effectively, thus reform was born. John Dewey helped America to step it up and help kids really understand.

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), colloquially known as the Dewey Decimal System, is a proprietary library classification system which allows new books to be added to a library in their appropriate location based on subject.
It was first published in the United States by Melvil Dewey in 1876.Originally described in a 44-page pamphlet, it has been expanded to multiple volumes and revised through 23 major editions, the latest printed in 2011. It is also available in an abridged version suitable for smaller libraries. OCLC, a non-profit cooperative that serves libraries, currently maintains the system and licenses online access to WebDewey, a continuously updated version for catalogers.

Group dynamics is a system of behaviors and psychological processes occurring within a social group (intragroup dynamics), or between social groups (intergroup dynamics). The study of group dynamics can be useful in understanding decision-making behaviour, tracking the spread of diseases in society, creating effective therapy techniques, and following the emergence and popularity of new ideas and technologies.

Half-decimal half-duncecap was a method teachers used to shame their students when they misbehaved in the 1800s. It was an odd looking cone shaped cap made out of paper that was marked with a “D” or the word “Dunce”. The pupil would set in the front of the class while wearing this cap.
